Happy Birthday!

Adorava--Sam is looking fantastic and he and Isabel should throw some gorgeous chicks. So glad you are happy with him and that he has a great home.

Javagirl--happy birthday! Your new silkie girl is cute and should be quite the stunner when she grows up.

Lynzi--I have a br hen that has a huge comb on her that flops over. With the large fowl, its easy to tell who is a boy and who is a girl. Silkies are always a crap shoot until you can see definate wattles and combs. My rir boys are handsome boys and so far well behaved. Last night, Olof decided to take a shot at me and I promptly booted him and then proceeded to chase him all over the yard. I think he got the message. I expected that they would challenge me every once in a while so I took immediate action to reinforce my supreme leadership in his tiny brain. This morning it was Legolas, my silkie roo, who took a shot at me. He got the same treatment. Its good to remind them who is boss.

Back to work for me today. Being busy cleaning yesterday kept me from thinking too much about my dad. Work should be good for that as well. Looks like rain today. Hoping that folks upstate get some as its really dry up there.

I like photo friday idea. Now if only I could get photos posted instead of links. Never had that problem before.

Oooh man did I have fun last night. Meeting Java today to give her some birthday chicks (LOL) and some gorgeous eggs, so I had to round up the chicks before going to sleep last night.

The older chicks were no problem, one of the roosters that's going to auction screamed like a banshee so my neighbors love me, and my rooster Q-tip (also leaving today) was sweet and just clucked at me. His voice box must be tired after all that incessant crowing. :)

HOWEVER, I was also trying to get some younger babies, about four weeks old - that still have two broody mamas watching them even up on the roost. Woo boy - in pitch dark I was being chased around the coop by two HUGE broodies all poofed up like turkeys. Only managed to grab five chicks and I had to get outta there before I was eaten alive by my own chickens.. Don't mess with broodies, especially not if one is a gigantic langshan!! :)

Hello from the beautiful 1000 Islands.
Welcome!
We had Call Ducks for many years. They are lovable...YES. And we have
a pond (my husband dug with his back hoe). Our ducks did not go to the
barn by themselves. THEY NEED TO BE DRIVEN IN.

Ours just wanted to stay on the Pond. It was a lot of work for us. AND
they are much dirtier than chickens. We found they needed MORE CARE.

Our Chickens go in and out by themselves. AND we have automatic door.
WE FOUND CHICKENS ARE MUCH EASIER AND LESS WORK.
I have to agree. We tried 3 ducks and although I adored them, they had to go. They were more work than 40 chickens.
Rouens aren't big swimmers. They just need enough water to stick their heads in so they can clear out their nostrils. Mine have a kiddie pool, and enjoy it, but they'd be fine with big dishes or a bucket.
I had 2 rouens and one mallord... the rouens were always the first in the pond. Couldn't get in fast enough! lol
I never get tired of pics. I just don't have a good camera. You can post all the pictures you want.

Agreed.
What to you guys think about Photo Fridays? Everyone post a cool picture from the past week?
Yes, yes, yes! Love getting ideas and oohing and ahhing over other people's chickens and setups.

Is it my imagination, or are our fresh eggs THICKER than store bought? I mean the inside of the egg, not the shell. I go to whip up an omelet and am always surprised at how thick it is.

I had 4 doz eggs out for sale yesterday and one person bought them all, returning one of my empty egg cartons. Guess they like my eggs.

It's a day late, but here are the pictures I just took. The first two are the 6x6 coop with 6x10 run that I built by myself with a raised bed cucmber trellis attached to the end. First time using power tools and happy with the result. The rooster is the pretty boy I got from Travis and Tab earlier this year with a few of the pullets from the same trip (all laying nicely). He is a double barred golden coockoo marans.

We went to the NY State Fair on the last day, and somehow managed to bring home the oldest (not sure how old) hen in the whole show. It was either us or the "meat people" getting her, so needless to say my son and I brought her home. We hope she's still laying, as her vent looks good and he could fit 3 fingers between the bony parts (not sure the name). Not sure why the picture is sideways. She is a Partridge Rock girl, and we are thrilled to have her.
