NY chicken lover!!!!

The only good thing about TS is that they're close and always have a selection of chicks and ducklings. But I've heard horror stories about hatchery birds. I'd rather buy ducklings from someone local but I only want 2 or 3 to go with my 6 red sexlinks. They would be more as pets so I'm just looking for friendly and non-flighty. Runners seem like to good choice but I'm not picky. I had 6 Runners when I was a child and have such great memories of spending all day going for a walk with them following right behind me. My chickens do that a little bit but not like my ducks used to. I think TS only had Peking ducklings last year and I don't want to have to buy 6 because I'd have to cull half of them or re-home them. If someone has a suggestion of the best place to buy them other than finding local please let me know.

Cheers,
Jay

Same here, too bad I wasn't still living in Albany, I'd split a batch with ya, but I too like the runners ever since Stony shared the pics of his. They look like they have a ton of personality! If like to talk with my neighbor too and see if she'd ever be interested in adding any out in her pasture. She has the perfect spot with a small pond, a small lean to, etc. She's already offered up her land to house a horse if I ever decide to pursue that.

I could always get 2 or 3 here, after I rehome 2-3 of my chickens, and convert my larger coop into a duck house. If I can get my two Orpington hens to join the silkies in their coop :). I'm probably getting way ahead of myself here tho. My husband will want to strangle me if I mention the thought of one more animal! Lol

You have only been showing your back yard ..Cant tell what your house looks like ..from that

I don't know cuz I think I saw a "drone" out there the other day. Might be scouting out my chickens. Of course it could be a "Silky drone" trying to invade my flock.

You know I once found someones house I was going to by using their address to Google earth it and I knew it was the right house when I saw it.

My only real point is be careful what you say and information you give out.

I suffered from bursitis for a long time, finally got shots. Took 3 sets and now I only occasionally have pain. Also, if you havne't already, have Dr. prescribe lidocaine patches...they are a miracle.
I also use them for shoulder pain from Fibromyalgia...Sometimes I think I should just put them all over my body! LOL

But can only use 5 at one time...couldn't cover it all!

Of course, I passed my 40's long time ago..

Well, let's just say I'm closer to 50 than to 40 and leave it at that.

The doctor wanted to know if I wanted an Rx at this point in time, but I declined. Mine is not too bad unless I've been sitting in the car for a while and then go to get up and out of the vehicle. Then I feel a good shot of pain. I suspected arthritis, but he said it was more likely mild bursitis. My mother uses Lidocaine patches on her back and does get some decent relief from them. I've heard Fibromyalgia can be awful, Marquisella.

Horeskeeper--I've made homemade egg noodles and perogis from scratch. I rolled it out by hand. I thought they turned out well. I would like to get a hand crank pasta machine to make it a little easier though. I have one I use with polymer clay and can't use for food now.

Dw makes perogis and I've bought her a pasta machine. I've yet to see any home made pasta though. She is busy doing other things though.

Check CL you might find one someone isn't using.

My mom slaved over the weekend making dozens of pierogies! They're my absolute favorite when homemade. I'm waiting for her to drive 4hrs to bring me some lol

we brought our chicks home from Farm n Tractor in a cardboard box that looks somewhat like a happy meal box . 2 chicks to a box .
Just a little extra room for their 2 bodies .
Our Rooster came home from the state Fair in a lg cardboard box .

If they are in darkness they will sleep & be calmer ..like all birds..& maybe poop less

I forgot we didnt use hardware cloth for our run ..we used that galvenized horse fencing ..nice & sturdy

Sounds like lots of folks have used cardboard boxes!

Thanks for the input, Gramma Chick.

We sell bunches of chicks, buy birds, give them away and bring birds to the fair. I have lots of "dog" crates but I really prefer cardboard boxes with long narrow holes cut in them for ventilation. Think 1" high and the entire length of the box. They can't fit out of it but lots of fresh air because boy, are they smelly. Then the box goes in the trash or burned. Also, if you want to keep their feathers nicer the cardboard dosen't allow their feathers to get stuck in the fence part as much.

I had a epidural spinal injection in between my 5th & 6th vertebrae over Christmas break. Darn degenerative & bulging discs. It definitely helped a lot, but the doctor said it will only get worse. Great. Not. Mine really gets knotted up when I work at a desk/computer too long. I have found that the Tiger Balm patches ease some of the discomfort. Hate it when its tough doing something I like. Can't hurt really bad when I have to vacum or clean toilets!

We have eggs in the incubator too! Put them in on Sunday 2/17. I will be checking them this weekend. Good luck!

Do you have a specific breed or size you want? I have a friend that has lots of ducks and geese. Let me know.

Happyhens! I'm looking to get some Pekins and/or blue/black Swedish....would love to know if your friend will have ducklings, or hatching eggs!!

Also looking for a couple goslings for the spring.

Funny, there was a black Swedish duck on Otisco Lake last spring, happily dabbling around with the wild Mallards. I didn't know what it was until I looked it up. It was quite the handsome bird. I imagine it was an escapee -- or perhaps someone dumped it, which must be illegal.
