NY chicken lover!!!!

If you must collect them I'd try it at night and with a headlamp set for dim. That way you'd have both hands free, one to pick up chicks and one to hold your shield.

I have a fishing net screwed to a long stick for bigger chickens.
No need now- every one is GONE!! Disappeared- not a trace. We found one and were able to revive it but every other chick is no where to be found????

I do wish the sister to TOB's BM would start to lay. I fear she may be and not where she should and something is happening to her egg. I really should check her to see.

Helen has laid 7 eggs in 7 days. I hope her sister starts laying for you soon, too, Rancher.

The CRs and the Delaware are starting to get more red in their combs, too. We'll see when they start to lay, but the rocks looked very curious when Helen got into the nest box this week.

Is it too early to feed extra calcium to the younger pullets I have? I've heard you don't want to supplement calcium to younger birds, but can't remember the age when it's good to start. I figured laying time...

I give it 2 weeks before I think they will start laying..so they dont have to draw from their bones if they dont have enough calcium .

Shells I save in the frig ...microwave & then cop in my food processor to tiny bits

Thanks, Gramma. I can probably give all my older pullets calcium supplement at this point in time. I just don't want my younger girls to have it yet. Gotta remember those egg shells ground up...such a good idea.

County Boy,

That's terrible about the missing chicks. I'm really sorry.

Ke I hope the wife is doing good!

Country boy I'm sorry sweetie.

TOB that's awesome your girl is laying so well!

So I was wondering is it weird that my son rubs the backs of the birds at night when he checks on them? He says they calm down and fall asleep easily??

I try to do it with the young ones ( almost 3 months ) every night ...I call it petting them ..I want them used to me touching them .

I think that is sweet -- and who doesn't appreciate a nice back rub at bedtime? I notice my birds are very tolerant of my younger son, too, and seem to be calm in his presence. Your son sounds very caring!
