NY chicken lover!!!!

Lynzi, I got an egg from my BR too for some reason her laying has been sparatic, and one of my 22wks amber links started laying too! Silkies doing thier thing as usual they lay on the floor they lay in the nest box they lay on the floor they lay in the next box. I just give it up, I think the babies bother then so they lay where they can hide and sometimes burry eggs.

Nutty I want to do the same thing there is a thread I will post and if you ask the person who started it they should give you some plans on building your own it doesn't seem hard. https://www.backyardchickens.com/t/...g-candling-pics-progression-though-incubation

Stony very nice!!!!!!!!!!!

So I had to get a rodent trap from someone in our Rochester City Chicken Club and he told me to just pick it up and take a look at his chickens (he was away on vacation) so I did, and although he has a nice setup he doesn't have much of a yard. I must say I am very very very thankful for all that I have and a large city lot. Plus Everyone is complaining about the chickens eating the grass and so on. I essentially have two yards so I'm good plus I let the weeds grow a bit high and let the girls at them.

OMG the neighbors on both sides of me got robbed I'm so worried about my chickens, these are petty thieves so I'm sure my pit mix stardard schnauzer mix keep people back. The yorkie just barks because they are barking lol. my six foot privacy fence makes it hard to get stuff as well.

Talked to wife on break i guess the light sussex got out and she was trying to get her back into the small coop. Thatas when the roo went after her. He just started mateing the hens not long ago. Any idea when he will calm down about us handleing them? Thats if he does calm down.

Tundra laid an egg today! Yay! Now if only Pearl was feeling better.

What do you guys think? She stands there looking very pathetic and looks almost like she's going to pass a large BM or an egg. Her vent has a lot of movement too. I don't know whats going on with her. I checked her crop, not hard, and I see her eating food, eating grit and eating oyster shell too.

Breella,

So sorry Pearl is ill. Poor girl. I hope she makes a turn-around soon. Any chance she is egg bound?

Lynzi,

HOORAY on the EGG !!!

Chris,

Hope your wife is on her way to a good recovery.

Stony,

It's good to be handy! Nice mini-grill. Got the job done, eh?

Jlaw sorry about the roo all the ones I have are pretty good they don’t like to be touched but then again I don’t try but they do not attack they just walk away from me calling the hens away from me. The only roo that likes to be touched is my silkie roo he loves to be held and pet.

Miquwid thanks will check out that thread. If it was up to me I would just buy them one but this is what they want to do so I will give it a shot.

Breella sorry Pearl is not feeling good . Is she laying eggs ?

Got a $50 dollar gift card rebate from Lowes today from when we bought the washer so am thinking I will use that on supplies for the kids homemade incubator. I am pretty sure I am going to show some chickens at the fair next year. Don’t know anything about it so got to start researching it.
Found some patterns for Hen saddles and am going to whip up some the only thing I will need is snaps and elastic as I have tons of fabric sitting in totes and am pretty good with a sewing machine so figure give it a shot I could even embroider the hens name on it with my embroidery sewing machine. Just another project to add to my busy schedule

Morning Everyone!
Well I went out to the nest box today to check for another egg. My son's Buff Orp (the one who isngoing thru a molt) was sitting in the nestbox on 3 eggs (2 are still the old ones that I've been meaning to remove). So I don't know if she's the one laying??? I thought hens don't usually lay when they're going thru a molt....

Mine did a small molt ..didnt ever stop laying

So i'm at work just got a call. The roo went after the wife. Moving him into the small coop with some girls untill my turkeys are ready to move out there in a month or so. If he aint shaped up by then he will be a different shapes in my freezer. Just mad i wanted him for ee's and drove a few hours for him and some other birds. Think i'll just have to find bared rock hatching eggs and raise me a roo from chick. This roo was a few months old when we got him.

Wife and kids do the feeding and treats and eggs mainly. But he don't really get treats cause he don't trust/like us so stays back. Then we try to single him out for treats and all the other chicks grab them first he just stands there.

Guess we should have held him more whenw got him i don't know.

The Rooster thinks hes boss ...when you are gone ..He is trying to figure out where he fits in the pecking order
Maybe the wife & kids are not giving him good eye contact ? or he thinks she is a hen ?
She needs to establish she is above him on the pecking order & has a right to handle the hens .
He was protecting that hen she was trying to catch .
My Roo pecked me when I petted one of the hens in the coop..
One time he came out backwards by his tail ... the other time he came out by his neck ..
And he got lectured about how I was going to touch the hens anytime I wanted to .

How about have the wife & kids play Bat the Rooster
Have them go out with a broom ...as soon as they see him ..Chase the rooster & bat him with the broom every time they see him when they are out .
Maybe yell bad rooster !

I agree with Gramma Chick ..... you have to really bear down on the roo ... I had one that loved to attack - frankly - for him, attacking back just upped his attitude.

After that - when ever a roo does a little rush at me, I walk at him with arms held out ! His eyes do something like this ....
ep.gif
and he runs off - because he knows if I catch him he is in for some forced cuddling and being toted around under my arm for a while.

Good luck with him - don't feel bad if wife and kids don't have the firm hand he needs .... we all have different personalities. But you have to go right him in one way or another .... or eat him.

Jaw- I had a GLW roo that didn't actually attack, but ran right up to my little girl, not in a nice way. I swatted and chased him, but when he did it the third time... He left before she got hurt. The remaining GLW roo is much kinder to the hens too. I have a EE roo that has been locked up in the Eglu for over a month for lack of deciding what to do with him. I dont want him fighting with the GLW roo and didn't want him jumping the pullets when they were small. His only other option was dinner. He is a year old, but you are more than welcome to have him. He is not an attacker, keeps his distance, not a lap pet type. His sister was a good layer until she roadkilled. I also have 2 Olive Egger Roos if you like to pick one of them, from Tab this spring. I would rather you get rid of a bad roo than to have someone get hurt, because the rehab attempt may not work.
