NY chicken lover!!!!

well I maybe ordering some hatching eggs. Wife said my roo went after my daughter yesterday so today she got to hold him along with my son. He wasn't too happy being held but he didn't fight it really. I think i'm going a different breed for my roo though maybe a BR and then just get some amer. hens for my ee's. I'm hopeing he don't get too bad before I can get some hatching eggs. Grrr only chicken I really wanted to keep is a pain.

Ok question. how long do the roos have to be on the hens to do the duty? saw my roo mount my hen for like 25 sec if that long.

That should do it, they can be really quick. Too bad you live so far from me or I'd offer you a BO roo. My boy fathered them and he's the most docile rooster I've ever come across. Silly bird loves to sit in your lap and be petted, and he likes kids too. I'm hoping his sons inherit that from him.

Pyxis - she is a supposed to be a production white from the TSC ... she looks it - but has little streaks of black in her and all 3 of her peeps have the black streaks too - very subtly. She is pretty skinny - I guess from being broody - but the peeps are fully feathered out, so she should have fattened up some.

Anyway my SS Roo is enamored ... he is following her all around and offering food to all of them. I guess I lucked out that the early intro to the flock went so well. Tonight roosting with an angry momma will be a hoot to watch .... I may have to hunt chickens in the dark once she settles down. If I had a good coop to run set up I could let them work it out but I'll have to force them all into the snap coop as the run is open to owls and such ... just netting around the coop and it is only big enough for roosting in.

How is the hoop coop building coming along ?

Slowly. I've been crazy busy. I worked on it a little yesterday and somehow cut my arm open on a panel even though they're not remotely sharp. Who knows.

I also have a duckling working on hatching and I hope she hurries up so I can give her to momma duck and finally turn off my incubator!

Rancher one of the boys saw a homemade incubator online somewhere and they have been driving me nuts to help them make one and then let them hatch out eggs in it so figure if anything it would be a learning experience for the boys

Chris it was supposed to be double gold laced Barnevelders plus there is Golden Lakenvelders just typed them into one bird.
How's the wife doing today?
Tab Morning

Sally I did google it just figure if anyone here had made any and had any pointers from it that would help

I went out today and saddled, put on Blukote, dosed with eprinex dusted for mites, and put some Vaseline on these new chickens feet they are all in some rough looking shape but should be fine. The females are so bald from the roosters there is 6 hens and 5 roosters and they are all together apparently have been always together and they don’t seem to fight actually I separated them and they went insane trying to get back together they kept running into the sides of the pens trying to get back together I eventually ended up putting them back together and they settled right down. Interesting that there is so many roosters and no fighting. The females should definitely be fertile.

Since this is to be a family project that sounds really cool. I wish you the best. I'm sure they'll have fond memories of building it.

Jlaw - I doubt you'll have a hard time finding a roo, if you choose not to hatch. Some breeds and lines make better pets than others. BO's are usually very nice. Keep in mind though that some birds don't take well to strangers so see that everyone who will be around the birds spends lots of time with them. I'd advise taking turns giving them treats.

I wanted charcoal grilled chicken. For 2. Couldn't find a small grill in town. So....

I took 5 minutes out of my day and made one

Stony your so handy & resourceful !!

JLaw check Craig's list lots of pretty Roos listed lately. Even down in your area. And the fair starts next week in hamburg and there are always a lot of chickens there.

In fact this year I plan on watching the show they have put on for years. "How to bathe a chicken" :)

So i'm at work just got a call. The roo went after the wife. Moving him into the small coop with some girls untill my turkeys are ready to move out there in a month or so. If he aint shaped up by then he will be a different shapes in my freezer. Just mad i wanted him for ee's and drove a few hours for him and some other birds. Think i'll just have to find bared rock hatching eggs and raise me a roo from chick. This roo was a few months old when we got him.

Wife and kids do the feeding and treats and eggs mainly. But he don't really get treats cause he don't trust/like us so stays back. Then we try to single him out for treats and all the other chicks grab them first he just stands there.

Guess we should have held him more whenw got him i don't know.
