How old are the cockerels? When does Faith start processing? I thought it was early April. John & Buddy talked this morning... They're going to process ours & some of his in 6 weeks.

The silkies are plotting already.

6 WEEKS! I can't wait that long. I need these guys done now. The younger ones I just want gone cuz I don't want to have to deal with them. The others are ready now.

No I haven't been wearing it. I'm mentally strong enough to withstand their shinannigans. If they are true to the bantam form they'll hatch early or at least one will. I had one chick hatch 2 days early.

Now i heard from Claudia and the Dels I took are hatching. Yippee.

So the x-ray machine apparently does no harm. I did read 80% hatch on some posting somewhere. That's what she'll get 10 out of 12 = .83%

Take care

Tim

Faith emailed me the other day...April 15th is the earliest. I've got to email her back and confirm...

Hi there my name is tony. me and my fiance karyn just got our first flock. we were hoping to find someone in the western ny area to talk to and get advice. We live in medina.

Hey rancher....I'm just getting in on this today - busy with hatching and those that decide to hatch and die (darn SILKIES!!!!!) and those that look ready to hatch and just sit drat! Anyway, I just wanted to check are you looking to take some of your stock and turn them into meat for your freezer? I've actually done it several times and while wearing isn't all that bad just very messy. If I can find the link I'll send it to you. Basically there is a cone device that you put their necks through and then continue on - but for those of us who love our chickens and those of us that both harvest and use them as pets I'll refrain for now. If you want me to PM how we did it - just let me know - we did 14 XLarge Cornish in one day....

Hope every one is doing well and HAPPY 1ST DAY OF SPRING EVERYONE!

BTW, 1 Black Silkie, 1 Nankin, 1 Blue Andalusian and 1 Barred Rock. ! had two Silkies decide to die on me...wait 3 in the last day....one pipped her self all the way out and when I finished popping the shell (less than 14 hours) she was cold as stone and waaaaay too huge for that egg! I had two that started to pip, shelled them out some from the struggling (kept is light and simple) and they crapped out on me. Had another one hatch - running around sleeping with the pals and just flopped over and died - dang it!

Anyway, three incubators in lockdown now with the remainder of the Silkies, Nankins, Blue Andaluasians, BBR Cubalayas and BR. The others have Anconas, BRs, couple kinds of cochins, Sumatras, Silver Seabrights, Silver Hamburgs and MFDs, I just pray to God that I at least get 50% hatching out of these guys....humidity is perfect and so it temp. Ducks and Geese are anytime in the next week - I feel like a nut job!

HEEEELLLLLLP!

Ok first. Hi Tony. Welcome to the madness.

Trish , if I can figure out what to do with these roos so I can move the pullets to the coop I might be able to wait. I thought you were making a cone. I need a schedule of when some one, anyone who processes is going to do it so i can plan to have them done and mark it on the calender. OR DO THE DEED MYSELF!

Now Scott is sending me Columbian Rock eggs on Wednesday, like I said so they should be ready to go into the incubator on Monday or Tuesday. When are the Barred Rock eggs coming? You did order them right? Now you see this is why I need to know about a schedule for processing. Cuz we both know they ain't all going to be pullets.

Thurs is fine. I will pull the CM and Del on Weds night and have them boxed and ready to go. I'll be up anyhow, even if I don't go into school. I'm hurting to much.

Now Fryekitten, you can pm me that information. As you can see I'm expecting dual purpose type hatching eggs to come and that means more roos and more to be processed. If I could get someone who wanted the chicks to raise themselves I'd be happy, but some people think they're going to wait til I've done all the work feeding them and watering and bringing them to weight and then they can have them for free. Well they can just pound salt!

As far as your silkies go? It can be a lot of reasons why eggs don't hatch. Genetics of course but the age of the hen or rooster, or the health of either and that affects the health of the egg. As you know chick and eggs ezis too. Mal position can keep some chicks from getting out. Believe it or not but the head has to be tucked under the right wing. Kinda like a baby. If he's breach as my son was that means a Ceserean. He came out butt first and he's been doing everything butt backward since. (JK). Anyhow you get the idea. So don't feel to bad. Just keep on hatching.

Everyone else, chicken on

OMG - UR funny! I understand - no free meals ( har har and pardon the pun

) Anyway, I'll get the info to you! It's not fun and kind of tiring - I've actually done 2 Turkeys and some Pheasants as well in the past year. Too funny, before that the only thing I ever had experience with was a frog in Biology. But I read the books and pulled off the chicks, turkeys and pheasants along with a boar of ours that got loose and I had to shoot because I didn't want him turning feral since I couldn't get him back out of our woods and he had escaped for the last time. I'm not proud of killing animals but it had to be done and I'm proud of the fact I learned and taught myself what needed to be done.

Anyway, your right about the Silkies, the one that had the shell cracked all the way around and could finish getting out was head facing into the narrow portion of the egg rather than the correct way, not sure on that one since all my eggs are pointed so that the large end is slightly upward. Silkies crack me up I must say.

If I was closer I would come show you how to take of the Roos but since I'm not I'll PM you the information.

Thanks and good night everyone. Gotta check the incubators for heat and humidity and the babies are peeping themselves to sleep - one last check before beddie-bye!

So Rancher... How old are the younger Del roos that you want to get rid of? The oldest chicks in my grow out pen hatched Christmas day. Trying to figure out if I can work them in. I think John is planning on making a killing cone too. Unfortunately, he's been working 6 days a week so doesn't have time right now. I think we have a traffic cone somewhere... I know it can be cut down so it would work. We found this thread helpful: https://www.backyardchickens.com/forum/viewtopic.php?id=109583

My 6 frankenchickies - I mean meat birds - now have a 3x3 brooder to themselves. They're bigger than month old Orpingtons -- and my Orps are huge! I expect them to start looking freakish in another week or so. Wish it was warmer, I'd get them outside.

Thought my hatch was over, so I pulled the chicks out & started candling. A lav orp egg peeped at me!
jumpy.gif
So back in they went! They'd better get on with it... I have eggs coming out of my ears that have to get in that bator!

Anyone want to buy some eggs??? I have Lav & Split Orpington and BBS Silkie eggs available right now. I also have some experimental silkie eggs that will be cheaper. I put a blue hen & a black hen in with my whites to see if the cockerel is dominant white. Most of the chicks will be pure white & others will be mystery chicks. PM me if you're interested!
