NY chicken lover!!!!

Unfortunately it's not as simple as it seems. Plus, I can't really kill the dog now, seeing as how the guy has it locked up. And nobody around here follows the leash laws. Not even we do (and I say we as in me and my parents and I have no say over what they do with the dog). Although to be fair, our dog stays on our property and doesn't kill other people's animals. So anyway, technically we are breaking the same law I'd be calling the cops on him for. And I have no say in whether or not we follow that law because the dog and property aren't mine. And, our neighbors aren't always exactly pleasant people. If I call the cops on him, there's nothing stopping him from calling the cops on our dog. Or shooting our dog in revenge. Or coming down and killing all my chickens himself because there's really no way to make them two-legged predator proof. Or maybe he'd start lodging noise complaints against my roosters, even though they're legal to have.

So really the only option is to shoot the dog, and that's a problem because I don't own a gun, so I'd have to BORROW a gun, or go out and get a gun which I'm really not comfortable with. Or I could catch the dog and drop him at a shelter, which is probably illegal. And I can't do that, because my father talked to the guy before I had really decided what to do and now the dog is locked up, which isn't a bad thing in this case.

So anyway, this whole thing is really long and complicated and as much as I'd like to just call the cops (who wouldn't do anything anyway, they've never been good about enforcing the dog law in this area) or kill the dog, it'd be hard. I would LOVE advice though if anyone has any ideas of what I could do in this situation. I'm hoping that the fact that he's going to pay me $80 for the birds the dogs killed and possibly hundreds in vet bills (exotic vets aren't cheap) will wisen him up about keeping his dog on his own property, but so far that's all I can really do. Otherwise, I'm really stuck unless the dog makes another appearance.

Sorry for writing so much, but this whole thing has me incredibly frustrated.

:( Sounds like he would have been a really great roo ... brave already.

But stonykill is right - by the time you even grab a borrowed gun (which is DANGEROUS - never borrow guns - you have to know them or you should not touch them) Lacy may be dead.

I forgot what nasty people they are - but I think you have to call animal control or whatever it is called there and DEMAND that they take this dog away and try to find it responsible owners.

I can't even imagine her dead - I held her as a fuzz butt and she was the cutest thing! and as a teen you have her in riding in the car with you and training to be a therapy animal. She is very special ....

I'll think on this tonight and hope to come up with some ideas - but now is the time to have a hard shell - toward your two-legged neighbors. Perhaps even a call to their landlord if they rent ? Talking about legal liability ... that could shake up a home owner. ??

I'll keep thinking for you. Meanwhile - I don't think you can let anyone out unless you are there.

I'm not - they're all on lockdown and mad about it. He does rent, so perhaps I could talk to the homeowner. In the meantime, I've ordered a dog repeller that I'm going to point right at the area that the dog always comes from. When it senses motion it blasts an ultrasonic noise that really hurts their ears. I'm also going to fence in that whole area to try to block the dog's access point. But really, since I have no gun, if the dog appears again I'll have to 'steal' it and dump it at a shelter or take it and have it put down. Not nice, but there's not much else I can do that I can think of.

2541 mark.

Fair two days , stop. Tired , stop. Saw chickens, stop. Very bad examples some, stop. Report of one being in cage dead, stop. One with bare butt for sale by someone named Jeff, stop. IMO don't buy chickens at fair, stop.

Off to take nap,

Rancher

Rancher OMG those birds were not so great looking. I wish I could have caught up with you! Did you see a lot of birds had over grown beaks and nails, UGH. I washed my hands and shoes very well and of course of our clothes went in the wash. Some birds Gramma thought had a yeast infection. There was a case of bumble foot, some broken toes. Yeah definitely not a place to buy birds! There has to be better poultry shows out there.

I've been getting some large eggs lately too. 3.1 oz and even a 3.2 oz. 3.7 is their record last year. Some are so large that I have to rubberband the egg carton in order to put it out for sale. Egg customer love those eggs! Once in awhile some blood like that is normal.
I was letting out chickens out to free range yesterday when one of our egg customers (a little old lady) pulls off the side of the road. As she was looking in her wallet for money, a hen comes running over and looked at her kind of sideways like, "Ya got scratch? What do you have?". We were in the house laughing. Poor lady was trying to shoo her away so she didn't go in the road. It was comical.

Yeah I love those big eggs. That is funny the chicken trying to get something from that lady, some of my girls look for a second and will take whatever is in your hands LOL there is no shooing away my hybrids all 6 will take whatever you have.
it looks like all the young ones are corralled ...including N....is it okay to mention his name ?
We call him JOJO online.

Can't your parents tie up their dog for a little while?
Another though since this seems like a complicated thing um maybe some type of electric fencing?
When I was younger we had some that would stun a cow, no dogs came through that fence of course your dog will get hit when he lifts his leg omg that was horrible and funny and really horrible LOL obviously it doesn't need to be that high but you get the point. Omg that fence would hit me through my horse nylon lead.
I'm not sure how or what they've made so many advances in this technology.

So chickens are great growing out well, soon I will start on my homemade incubator and greenhouse. I gotta move the chicken tractor out of the way and get them working more on composting.

Next time it would be good to exchange cell #s to connect .

I was able to meet miquwid & son JOJO & LuvMyChicks1491 - TWO VERY NICE LADIES ..

My poor Pullet...

This was yesterdays egg, No blood on today's egg. Is this usual of new layers? (under a month laying)
Do you know which one did it ?
I would check her vent ...to see if it is prolapsed ( sticking out some ) .
She might need a little lubrication ..bag balm , vaseline ? she might be a little tight still ...as she lays she will probably stretch out more .

Gramma Chick - It was so nice meeting you. The ladies up front are still laughing at me. I came in this morning to them yelling "Good Morning Chicken Lady". They thought that it was cool that you made it when I explained what was happening. Our family has an long time running bet that it doesn't matter where my grandfather goes, even out of state, that he can find someone that knows him. When I told my uncle and mom that you knew him they laughed for at least 5 minutes. I wish that I could have met the rest of you that made it out, I just had to get home for my little boys birthday party!

Today is his actual birthday, 3 years old.

I'm sorry I missed you both. I was at the "Grange" which apparently is NOT near the OX roast, but I was there. Also today since it was the queens third too. I was very tired but I was there.

I'm still tired. Much to do and not enough time.

Glass---you really need to get a rifle and kill those coyotes. What they did was a classic example of trying to eliminate competition in their claimed area. One coyote will come out and draw a dog out to chase it around. When it has drawn it out far enough, the second coyote or the rest of the pack will come out and kill the dog. Your dogs are being baited for killing by the coyotes. You need to keep your dogs close and kill those coyotes because they will kill your dogs. BB guns will not deter a coyote. A rifle will end it.
Usually the one bait coyote is a lady ...to bait a male dog out ...Which is probably why it looked like play ..is Coda a boy ? And your dog a boy ?
