NY chicken lover!!!!

HELP! I may or may not have a sick chicken. When I went out to shut up the coop for the night I have a chicken that is whisling when she breathes. I figured out that it is my BC maran hen. She just started to molt this week and has lost her feathers on the front of her neck. I don't think that has anything to do with her whisling? It sounds like when one of my kids have a stuffy nose and are sleeping sick snore whisling. I looked at her good she doesn't have any discharge and her head isn't puffy at all. Is this something that I should be worried about? Do I need to seperate her from the rest? Help me. So far I have had no problems and I've only had them for 6 months so I'm super new at this. They are more like my pets then anything so Iwant to make sure that they are okay...I'm the type of person that hate it when one of my house plants dies, I don't kow what I woule do if I lost one of my girls. I'm sure that she isn't going to die...but I have no idea..

She might just have something stuck in her nose making her sound like that. Check her nares and see if they're obstructed. If not, I would separate her from everyone else and keep a close eye on her.

Does anyone know if the local shelters are accepting cats at this point? We have a stray hanging around our house, a tom, and he's fighting with my neutered male cat and terrorizing my female cats, plus one of my OEGBs is mysteriously missing. He's friendly enough towards humans, I think he's just hungry and needs a good home, but it can't be here. I think I could trap him easily enough but I don't want to have to kill him when I do. Or if anyone wants a friendly barn cat I'm sure he'd fit the bill once he was neutered.
I'm not sure exactly where you live but there is a place called Lollipop Farms near Rochester, NY. They don't refuse anything. Unfortunately, I had to surrender 4 cats a year ago because I had 16. Several strays showed up here and 2 had babies. I found homes for all but the 4. It still left me with my 7. I couldn't afford to neuter them and they were becoming old enough to breed. Lollipop took them, make me feel like crap and I left crying. But at least they would take them, along with a $200.00 (required) donation. They are not a no kill. They have some to be re homed, some that are for barns and some that cannot be placed and so are euthanized. Around here all the shelters are full, they have all become no kill and so unless they can place them in homes, there is no room. Veterinarians won't euthanize a healthy cat/kitten. It has become a huge problem. I have found homes for so many, kept more than I can say, spent thousands of dollars in vet bills. It makes me very angry. I hope you can find a home or shelter soon.

My girls (especially my BR) will a make a noise like that when they all go after the feed I put out for them. If I give them the mash it's almost like a powder so it goes all over and sometimes gets stuck in their noses making them sneeze or wheeze until they get it out.

LuvMyChicks,

Sure hope your chicken is not sick. You sound like me, worrying a lot over your pets and their health issues. I have only had my chickens since May, so we are about at the same point of "newbie-ness!" Anyway, the last 2 bags of shavings I bought from Nightingales were very dusty, and since I put them in the coop one or two of my chickens sound a little raspy once in a while. There is a lot of fine dust settled on the window ledges, etc., so I've got to get the coop cleaned out to the bottom ASAP. I've got the low-dust shavings ready to put in next; was hoping to do that this wknd and am hoping for better weather. Good luck with your bird.

Lynzi,

Have a safe trip to CT. Drive safe!

My BR is the same way. I think she eats so fast before one of the big girls pecks her on the head........I hear a squeak and a honk like she had to sneeze food out.

Brella, A disabled friend of mine has 8 Rhode Island Reds hens 3 years old.
She is having surgery and no longer can care for them. They are her pets
and wants them to go all together to a good home. FREE to a good home.

I don't know what colored eggs they lay. I do know they are very intelligent and
come when she calls them. If you are interested please PM me. Regards, Aria

I just went out to listen again. I waited till they settled again and Rosita only whistled a few times. I looked up her nose with my brightest fashlight and diddn't see anything except one ****** off hen. Hopefully it is just a false alarm. She may have gotten into something while they were out today. They found the area where I wacked the tall weeds down last week and they were having a field day scratching around in there, she may have gotten something in her nose then. She is one of the few girls that I can't get a hold of untill night time. They have been locked up in their run for the week. (It isn't a bad thing it is a huge area) My kids have been super sick and I've only been able to get out there a few times a day. They were VERY happy to get a few hours out today during nap time.

Glasshen, She really wants them to all go to the same person. They are her
Pets. She writes, the come to her when she calls them. 7 of them are so intelligent\
and 1 is a little independent. Hope you understand. This really a sad story.
She has found someone to take care of them for a SHORT time. She would like
them to be settled in their new home before she leaves for surgery. I am sure
you understand. Aria

I don't think that I would be the kind of home she is looking for. Once my girls are not productive or not good broody mothers they will end up on the dinner table. It sounds like it is important to your friend that they not end up food. I wish her luck.

Helloooo....(as Tigger would say) There is no way I can catch up on over 20 pages of posts I missed. I hope that everyone's problems have resolved and everyone's furnace is in running order.

My mom FINALLY has a closing date on the house she is selling AND the one she is buying, so we are in the home stretch regarding being at her house daily to help pack, sort and shift boxes from one room to another to make space. Just the final move, NEXT WEEKEND...eww...then I can do something *I* want to do. (Sleep is high on my "to do" list)

Gramma Chick, yes, the roosters of the sumantra breed/cross breed have VERY small wattles.

I will try to keep up from this point forward.

Tab? Did you have the baby yet? Did I miss it? (Actually, anyone can answer that one...I just can't find the time to read all the posts I missed to find out for myself)

Does anyone breed Australorps? I am thinking of adding a couple of them to my flock in the spring and don't want to wait for them to grow up from chicks. Just want to buy a couple from someone who is down sizing at some point next spring.

How come my ducks want to sleep on top of the table, instead of under it? They are getting pooped on by the chickens roosting in the rafters. I need a duck house. I'll add that to the list for NEXT spring.
