NY chicken lover!!!!

Miserable weather here today too. Nobody wants to leave the coop. I did get them out with some food, though, as I won't feed them in the coop because I'm a big meanie.

My jersey giant cockerel in the snow:
700

Most of the flock eating as quick as they can so they can run back to the coop:
700

A pullet sulking by the flock block:
700

It's so miserable not even the ducks want to come out of the coop.

In other news, the wry neck pullet is improving and I think I have a lead on some really nice quality eggs so I can work on getting a few more pullets for the flock. The faverolles just love the FF. They have regular feed always but each day I make sure they get a bowl of FF too and they gobble it down. I may put them on it only, they love it so much.

From Aria: For those who were wondering where all of Aria's snow was ;) This was actually from a Winter when Aria still had her Call Ducks. If you look closely you can see them in the background. And this is her Buff Silkie Roo, Ruscello who she lost prior to me bringing her Carlos, the Splash silkie roo
LINDAY, THANKS FOR POSTING FOR ME. PERFECT. THANKS AGAIN, ARIA

Cornell Small Farms had this posted on FB. Not many poultry processors are registered, but at least it has the info for the 2.

My chickens haven't left the horse barn since the snow arrived, horses have been staying in with blankets too on these nasty days. Hubby forgot to lock the one stall yesterday, so Dakota helped himself to licking the chicken feed trough clean and finishing off the flock block. No horse grain for him last night! Chickens have the run of the 36x48 barn, minus the tack room. Egg production has been down, even with the March chicks. Getting about 4-5 eggs a day. Luna has stopped brooding her fall chicks and resumed laying, she looks excellent and recovered fully from molt. If Annie still had her BBS Orps, I would get a couple more. Of the 4 chicks Luna hatched in June, 3 of them are roosting in the rafters with the 3 Anconas, 1 Brown Leghorn and 1 of the fall EE chicks. No problems with frostbite 10' up, but dislike watching for falling poop.

I believe Tab offered to host the picnic again, which would be in Rome, NY area.

Tab - so sorry about your dog. She gave you 10 1/2 years and you gave her a warm & loving home. You did the right thing, The hole she has left in your heart will always be there................................. but soon it will start to fill up with happy memories of her

I'm praying 2014 will be a better year for you

Went out to the shed this morning to feed/water everyone thats in there and realized something...My little blue silkie pullet is going to be 20wks old on 1/8/14, however she is still only about half the size of my lavender and splash silkie hen. At 20wks shouldn't they be the closest to full size that they are going to be? Maybe she's just going to be a really small hen. Just found it odd.

Thought about not shoveling the chicken run...but decided that they needed it...so I caved...at least there was only 3 more inches last night and this am. It'll stop snowing sometime...in March.. I'm just glad that I live here and not on the Tug Hill! (I'm so sorry if any of you do)

Can't decide if I should clean off the roof or not?

Everyone coming out of the duck hut to say hello. (It is under the pile of show on the left!)

I took my car in because since soon after changing over to snow tires there has been an insistent message to check tires. After many checks I got an emergency appointment this morning. After checking me in, the service guy says, Did you push the reset button? You can imagine my blank look. After driving at least 25 miles each way in this weather, blowing off my gym workout, and almost giving up a hair appointment, it was just a reset button!!!!grrrrr.

If the structure is built strong, I would leave the snow, it is a great insulator.

Our snow must be part of a new math problem. Yesterday after snowing for days, the snow mwtwe read 10 inches at dusk. It snowed overnight, and at 8am DH said "we almost have 10 inches." after snowing all morning, at 12:30, the meter read 6 and a half inches. It is mystery to me.

Wondering? We have a covered run and the coop. We do not let the chickens out Winter. What are they able to do in the snow? Just walk around? We have dirt and stones in our covered run and they can dig etc. And we worry about predetors..we lost many of our Silkies to them. Guess we are over protective. Lindsay, would love to see a photo of your small blue Silkie. Aria
