NY chicken lover!!!!

I'm thinking it would be pretty hard to "get caught" releasing an animal after trapping it where we live out in the sticks. If I lived in a neighborhood and caught something and brought it to the park down the road I can see the risk in getting caught, but I've been to LuvMyChick's house and she lives out in the sticks like I do. I can't see her getting caught releasing it elsewhere. I agree, killing it would be a better solution, however I, like her, do not own a gun either.
more than 5 miles from home or it WILL be back. I'm just stating the facts maam

Man all this talk about having to kill the opossum makes me so glad my dog did it for me. He was a very good boy that night and got lots of treats.

Warning graphic....I will not tolerate opossum in my chicken coop. I found one, I tried stabbing w a pitch for a bunch of times, but it just played opossum so..... I put in a feed bag and bashed it against my brick barn wall then tossed him in my outdoor boiler.I lost my favorite chicken ever to opossum.
I can come shoot for ya if need be. Releasing it somewhere else just makes him someone else's problem.

If you are hesitant to kill predators or pests, think how cruel it is to dump them somewhere strange where they do not have their shelter or a familiar food supply. Much more humane to just shoot and end it quickly.

That would make me so angry I'd probably do the same to it. But again, because I don't have a gun to do it quickly. I have yet to have a problem with those types of predators so at the moment I don't have a reason to purchase a gun to get the job done quickly. Which is why I'd probably spare it's life and release it 10 miles or so down the road in some field if it ever happened.

Thanks for all the input. As Lynzi said I live in the middle of nowhere and it wouldn't have been a problem for me to load the trap in the car and take it to the other side of town and release it on state land without anyone seeing me (got to love rural back roads)I knew that If I was to do that I needed to go far enough away that I was sure that it wouldn't be able to find it's way back...but as I mentioned before my friend was going to take care of it...He came and shot it this evening before dark.

I said that I didn't own a gun...didn't mean that I didn't know a someone that did.

While I was waiting for him to come..I did think about tieing a rope to the trap and droping it into the creek across the street to drown the little basterd, but I counld find a long enough rope.

That and I hurt my neck last night and I'm having a hard time getting around. I do drown all mice that we catch with glueboards. We have also used the stabbibg method one time on a racoon at our old apartment. I have a hard time with killing inocent things and I'll be the first to say that...BUT don't mess with my husband, kids, or my animals ...cause the rath of god will come down on you

. I said a few coice words to the thing then watch as Ray shot it. I have little regret. The only reason that I went with the live trap is incase I caught the cat so I could release him.

I will never forget running in the house shouting to my now ex DH "get your gun there is a opossum eating Shirley!!!" My mom always said I should I always have a .22 handy on the farm because you never know when you are gonna need one. But my ex thought I would accidently shoot a horse... well guess what the ex is gone and I got me some guns!!!!

Funny little story about mice on glue boards. My brother had two, one each on two boards. His wife wanted him to smash them with a shovel. He said he couldn't do that, he will just drown them in a puddle in their driveway. So he flipped them over in the water and watched. Well what, he and his wife, watched was the puddle water dissolve the glue and the two little mice ran away..... needless his wife was mad as heck.
He still tells that story and we laugh our butts off at him!

I don't know why its all in the quote... ugh

Just an intro, new to the forum. Utica-Rome area, incubated 9 eggs, 2 were duds though and got 2 Sizzles and 1 Bearded Silkie. Any Silkie/Sizzle people close to us? We would consider doing another hatch, learned a lot from this one. We had some older eggs
old.gif
that had traveled over 1100 miles

in November - December

. The eggs that hatched were less than 5 days old. 3 didn't pip, and 1 gorgeous white silkie got stuck during the zip and didn't make it

So, if we were to try again it'd be best to get eggs that are a little bit closer to us. So our little angels that hatched play with us every day

watch tv with us

and know we love them.
