NY chicken lover!!!!

Just an intro, new to the forum. Utica-Rome area, incubated 9 eggs, 2 were duds though and got 2 Sizzles and 1 Bearded Silkie. Any Silkie/Sizzle people close to us? We would consider doing another hatch, learned a lot from this one. We had some older eggs

. The eggs that hatched were less than 5 days old. 3 didn't pip, and 1 gorgeous white silkie got stuck during the zip and didn't make it

So, if we were to try again it'd be best to get eggs that are a little bit closer to us. So our little angels that hatched play with us every day

No, No. Your chicks should not be watching TV at such a young age. I always read books to mine until they are 6 weeks old. ;) I actually had a rooster in a classroom setting that used to chirp so loud, at reading time, that I had to bring him into the reading part of the classroom, where he sat on my sholder and read the books with the class. Never once pooped on me either. He really liked it when the kids sang "Old McDonald". EiEiLOL

Some will chime in with source of eggs you seek. Just takes them time to respond.

Welcome! Not sure how many others out that way have Silkies but ke5hde and I raise them. We're in the Tully/Lafayette area which isn't too far from you. Egg production is slow right now but will probably pick up in the spring sometime.

There's a couple of us like Lindsay said that have quality silkies and cochins. I had 3 new little cochins hatch last night with hopefully more on the way today. The 3 that hatched so far are nestled in nicely under their silkie mama.
Hatching shipped eggs is always a crapshoot, too many variables in shipping. Come spring I'm sure we can find you some eggs, just be patient.

$450 fine of you get caught releasing an animal without a permit. Killing it is free. btw. Get yourself a pellet gun. At least an actual 800fps. Preferably in .22 caliber. Wally world has such an animal for $99 right now. At close range or in a trap that will kill a possum.
Agreed. A quality high power pellet gun with a properly placed pellet would do the trick. I keep one in the garage that shoots 1200fps. Sounds like a .22 when you pull the trigger.

Rifle and guns for me ....

I had a rabid groundhog once ... it would have been at least 30 minutes for the cops to come (no animal control where I was ....

Rifle ... 30 seconds. This is why I am so adamant about NOT having strict gun laws ... if you don't want one, cool - and actually VERY COOL - don't get one, make sure you know your local cops and there you go. Being scared of a gun or not learning all about them will led to the few disasters we read about. But for where I live - they are a tool and my animals may depend on me.
