NY chicken lover!!!!

Just got done shoveling my driveway and I need SALT!!! Lots of it! We never shoveled last snow fall because, well A it wasn't a lot of snow and B we have all wheel drive vehicles. Well my whole driveway is a sheet of ice. Fell twice shoveling it, and if I dare leave in my truck I'm not stopping until I hit the road. That can lead to some trouble living on a 55mph road. So I gotta wait for DH to get home with salt and hopefully he can make it up the driveway. :-/

Snowblowed the path twice and will have to again before bed I think. I don't use salt due to the chickens. I use grit. This way they can clean it up come spring.

Afternoon all. Shoveled twice so far. We are up to 10 inches so far. Neighbor finally plowed our road. Refilled waterers and feeders. The terrorists are out walking the paths. Speaking of, I finally got some pics of Bill and Thelma and Louise. Since I am always talking about them, I can now show you them!

Louise on the left and Thelma on the right. They come out no matter what the weather is like. I do love these heritage rir girls. They are straight comb.

This is Bill. He has a rose comb and is a big boy. His tail is a bit raggedy from the sexlinks picking at it.

Closeup of Louise. The coloring is a reddish mahagony color. She does have the characteristic red stripe down the front of her legs and toes as well. Cant see them under the snow though! You can see more pics on my profile page. I estimate the girls weight around 7 pounds. Bill is much heavier.

Now you can place the chicken with the name when I talk about them!

Hoping the snow is done soon. I dont need another workout.

I can not believe you let them out in the snow. Good garden o' peas! Where are their coats and boots? They're going to freeze to death. Don't you have heat in their coop where they can stay warm?

I need something that will melt this ice ASAP. I can't risk sliding into a 55mph road out of a driveway that is ALL hill. Otherwise I would use sand or something else. My chickens are all penned up anyway and with the amount of snow we got here, it'll be a while before they venture out of their chicken yard. IF I decide to let these three free range again come Spring. If I do let them roam the first one to **** on my porch will be dinner! LOL

I forgot you don't have chickens. You have Aliens.

Pharm love the chicken pics. They are beautiful. I shoveled out the girls. For some reason they stayed in the coop all day. Maybe the foot & half of snow was the reason? Lol. Can't say I blame them since it would of been up to their beaks. Sophie & Edie ventured out after I shoveled them out. At least they were productive with their self imposed lock up. 3 eggs today, they demolished 2 bags of frozen kale in an hour. Guess they are missing their greens :)

Does anyone know if TS only sells the ducklings listed on their site when chick days arrive? Or do they have other breeds as well?

The order form on the site tends to be more extensive than what they get in store. But they do get ducklings in a couple times, especially around Easter. I remember they got KC last year in Cortland. Chicks tend to be red pullets, leghorns, cornish rock x and mixed bantams every week, with one 'feature' breed - buff Orp, BR, brown leghorn, EE, jersey Giant are the ones I seen local.

Evening all. I braved the roads and made it to work today. I like where I work - they actually put out a bunch of soup and crackers for everyone that made it in as a thank you, so my dinner was some delicious tomato soup with common crackers. The chickens refused to come out of the coop today, and I bet they won't come out tomorrow till I shovel, spoiled things. I guess I don't blame them though, we got so much snow it's almost as tall as they are!

I've only seen Pekins and blue/black swedes in the store.

Anyone have BLRW's, I'm looking for a hen or two (or hatching eggs!), my boyfriend has decided he really likes the breed and told me to get a hen or two!! :woot
