NY chicken lover!!!!

Same thing happened to me

One guinea slipped through the netting and 3 others followed before I could even complete a shutdown on the coop

All my chicks are safe and sound, but I have 4 guineas in the trees somewhere on the property. I can see one of them about 80 feet up. Supposed to get cold and snowy tonight

They should be safe from any wandering predators, but I have no idea how I am going to get them down...

Good luck with yours

I've never seen a dead bird in a tree....so somehow they come down when they are hungry.

Holy moly! In the trees? I didn't know they could fly that high! LOL Well I hope they are safe, at least from predators if you can't get them down. Do you think they'd stay there all night?
They should stay there all night and I suppose the weather won't bug them much. I will have to be up at sunrise to see if I can convince them to come down before I head to work

After the pain in the butt yesterday I was all set to get the coops cleaned out, but when I went to get ready I realized that I was out of shavings. The bag that I thought was half full was full of garbage instead...DH.. I then realized that the Co-Op was closed . It was to late in the afternoon for me to make a run to a city to get some more, so will have to do it tomorrow and it is supposed to start to get cold, so not excited about it. I did mix it all up good. The coop isn't that bad, but the duck hut is all wet. I have to get the floor in it this spring. I added some more hay. At least it will help for tonight. The girls really enjoyed being out all day. We have a bunch of spots that have grass and they were all over it all day unless they were on the porch. They stand right at the back door. I think that they are looking for handouts. Even the boys (ducks) were loving it out today. There were a few puddles that they were playing in..

I've been working on my new coop. DS and I are going to have to go out to get shavings and the hardware that I need to finish it. I'm pretty sure that I have enough mesh to finish the attached run but I may get some more just in case, I'm sure that I will use it. I think that I am going to get ready to make a second one. It is turning out to be just the right size for a few bantams. I don't think that I would want to put more then 1 full sized hen in there, but a pair of bantam chickens should be just right.

I expect they'll come down when they're hungry. Remember animals like to be lead not chased so try to coax them in with a little food. If you can shut up all the others and leave a dish of food way to the back, or a trail just inside the run to the back , they might go in and then you can sneak around and shut the door.

I reckon they'll be safe for the night.

OMG, seriously? A truck? Across the lawn? On the warmest day since October? I hear there is an auction part of this forum. Maybe you can get good money for him on there?

I hope you get your cleaning done tomorrow. Shouldn't your DH help ya out? I mean, really, you earned it.
There are some days that I wish that I could. There are days that I wish that he would help me out, but he has no interest in having anything to do with the chickens except to eat the eggs. I don't push my luck. He made my big coop which is about all he wants to do. That and he goes to work on Sunday. So until he leaves for the week we spend the morning together as a family.. Would have to do it after he leaves.

Nervous now....Gru flew the coop today...Up and Over the poultry netting! When I went to get him back in he took off on the path of grass/mud that led under the side porch because he refused to touch snow. So he's roosting under the deck now. There's no getting him out either. Please keep your fingers crossed nothing gets him tonight. I can't believe he's under there and hasn't come out. Then again it's dark out now so he's probably settled for the night.

If you haven't seen preds snooping around then I expect he'll be okay for the night. Just be up first thing cuz if he's crowing he's sure to be up too. Mine start around 4 am.

Oh I'll be up bright and early tomorrow! Maybe not as early as 4am but 6:40! I left the poultry netting open so he can wander back in there if he chooses to at 4am or whenever the sun is coming up as of late.

I have an arsenal of treats ready for the morning

It is disappointing that a missed staple in the netting caused all this, but this is the first incident since they moved in way back in September. I had planned on upgrading the coop this Spring, but it looks like I will be building the new layout as soon as they are inside

Sorry to laugh but I've built and rebuilt a number of times as I find one thing doesn't work as well as I'd like. Next up is exterior nest boxes in the Delaware side of the coop. This will give them more floor space inside the coop.

Nothing works the same for everyone.

I wish you well,

Rancher
