NY chicken lover!!!!

That's what I was thinking. Sorry to hear you have an egg eater. I'm dreading letting my dog out period! He's a longhaired dachshund so of course he's picking up every trace of mud when he goes out. I usually groom him myself but I'm thinking of calling the place up the road and seeing if they will shave him down. I can't stand letting him out and then having to carry him to his crate back inside to keep him from tracking all over the floor/carpets.
At least you can pick him up fairly easy! He will probably look cute with a shave, that long hair would be trouble! Lady weighs 60lbs, which I can lift, but when she's muddy, I also get muddy. That and her skin has been so dry lately I've been giving her coconut oil in her food and trying to avoid baths when I can.

Yes I'm one of those weirdo's that celebrates her birthday...but to be fair I don't have kids yet. lol

Two chicks hatched so far and I also got a surprise last night. At about 3 am I peeked in the bator and there was an egg that had just barely tried to pip at the wrong end, but it hadn't gone through well. So I carefully opened a hole and the chick was fine. Candled and there was a second beak in the air cell! So I guess I have twins. Probably gonna have to help them out tomorrow.

No mud yet, but dreading the season. With 3 Bernese Mountain Dogs it will be a beach in my house. Thankfully I have hardwood floors but they still take a beating. Just gave one a bath today and she smells so good. Makes it so worthwhile. Can't wait for my chicks...another month. It's been 15 years since I had chickens, but look forward to it again finally. Love that I found BYC. It is so much help. Wish it had been around 15 years ago.

Do you cut open the cabbage? Sometimes the outer leaves are tough and its hard for them to peck a hole. I cut the cabbages in half & lay them with the insides up. That way they can get to the more tender insisdes. Once they get a taste, then there is no stopping them. Even the cores are eaten. My geese especially like cabbage...
When I give cabbage to my chickens I have a big screw that I put not the core and hag it up just a little over their heads so they have to jump for it. The first time it took them a few days to get hang of it, but now that they know what it is, it doesn't take them to long to eat the whole thing. They peck through the outside with no problems! I have one in the fried that I'm going to give them this weekend.

My big Roo earned his keep this morning. When I was doing my AM chores I was just finishing up when he made a funny noise and EVERYONE including the ducks ran under the coop. I was looking around and didn't see anything. Then I looked up! There overhead was a big hawk. Just hovering there. I waved my arms and yelled then just stood there. It was really high up. It was there a few minutes and then it flew away. I was so happy to see him protecting his flock. He stood out there and just watched. I was so proud of him. He got a few extra treats after that. Too bad he didn't eat any of it. He called his girls over and let them eat them. Not that I was going to get rid of him or anything, but after seeing him this morning doing his job, as long as he doesn't turn into a jerk he will always have a home here!

Is anyone interested in a pair of Silver Laced Cochin chicks. I think that they are about 4 weeks and I'm pretty sure that they are a cockerel and a pullet. I've been thinking about where I'm going with my flock and what I want to do and I'm not sure that they are going to fit into my plans. They could I guess, but I thought that if someone else had to have them and couldn't live without them then I could pass them on. I thought that I would ask here first. ( For real if there is anyone that would like them let me know. I can hold on to them till the picnic if needed)

Grrr, I have an egg eater! Looks like I'll be making a flock block when I get home tonight, late, again.
I'm getting about 5-7 eggs a day out of 9, yesterday was the first time I found an egg like that so I don't think it's been going on too long.
I'm hoping it's just boredom, but I'll up their protein with some scrambled eggs and add salt. My cousin had this problem once, she gave them a tray of salt for free choice and it never happened again.

I'm dreading taking the dog out to exercise tonight. She will be extra muddy! I might just have to give her a B-A-T-H.....

Lynzii, I don't think there is a difference between polish and polish top hat. Whoever sold him the polish also probably did not know their breeds very well. I know they are sold as "top hat" variety by some hatcheries, but a polish is a polish as far as I know with distinct color variations, and they all have a "top hat". Probably just lack of knowledge of the breed and/or they want them to sound extra fancy.

Ok - curiosity has got me..........has anyone ever crossed a polish (with or without top hat)

Hah! I complain about bathing 2 Beagles 'cos they're mud magnets when they're out hunting! Can't imagine bathing 3 dwarf horses....

I have to give our big dog bath tomorrow just cause he is stinky. He's a Golden retriever/ Blue Tick Coon hound mix. His name is Mater and that explains his attitude 100%. He's 78lb of dead weight for a bath. The dogs don't really get to muddy except their feet. They track mud in like crazy!

He was about a year in this pic but he has this dumb look still all the time!

Just watching the news and we are supposed to get 2-4 inches of snow tonight! I thought that today was the first day of spring! Mother Nature is so cruel.

straw works really well.

I have a pitbull mix a schnauzer mix and a yorkie and they manage to stay clean. the yorkie is the only with with a lot of hair but I keep her shaved all year so now worries there.
