NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning all! Sun is back so hopefully it warms up today. Heard a commotion last evening from the brooder and found a chick who had a bloody tail where it had been pecked. The others were after it. I put bluekote on it to heal it up but the others kept after it. One of the other chicks got a spot of bluecoat by her eye when she went to peck the spot. The others went after that spot as well. Ended up turning over my wire egg basket and put the two of them inside in in the brooder. Put the top and bottom of a chinese food container on two sides of the basket just to be sure they werent bothered on two sides. Worked well. Let them out to eat and drink this morning and kept the rest of the chicks from going after them. Put them back in the basket. Dh will have to let them out periodically during the day until I get home from work with some red bulbs. Hopefully that will solve the problem.

Hope this works while they heal. Sheesh! What a circus, eh?

This is the bump I mentioned a few days ago. It kinda looks like the pix in the links. Except it is not on the bottom of his foot. I stopped at Syracuse aquatic or aquarium in Jamesville, they don't have that product, and lamented all the products NY state forbids them to carry...just saw my photo, please excuse his dirty toes the bump is near his spur.

Ouch - hope you can get this nasty cleared up, Glasshen. Poor fella. They get themselves into trouble, don't they?

Quick check in, folks. I wish I could catch up on all the missed pages the last few days, but no can do. Hubby is playing golf in SC, lucky guy, and I've been the equivalent of a single mom since Thursday night. Just a little batty here, lol!

Quick update on the flock since the loss of my sussex to what I believe was coccidiosis. I treated everyone for 5 days with Corid and put electrolytes in their water as well. All seems fine, I'm relieved to say (though I'm still a little nervous).

As well, I took advantage of the one gorgeous day we had since about a billion years ago and cleaned the coop out completely on Thursday afternoon. It was a huge job, but I'm so glad I did that. The ladies seemed to approve!

This weather has me feeling like

... very cranky .... but if they are to be believed, it's all turning around for the better tomorrow. Sure hope so. If not, off to the loony bin I go!

Take care everyone and enjoy the rest of the weekend. Sure hope everyone is doing OK.

I hope no one minds me sharing some recent wildlife photo's I've taken around my area. I figure some of you might appreciate them, especially the waterfowl! Wherever there is a little bit of open water, they are concentrating, and there are some spectacular species to be seen and cool behaviors to observe. We are so blessed here in NY State with amazing natural resources and wildlife galore. Hope you enjoy the pic's.

Got this white-tailed deer in mid-leap; it made the Sunday paper, Outdoors section a couple of weeks ago. Took me years to finally get this shot, haha.

I call this one "Gentlemen's Club" -- a handsome bunch of Redneck ducks.

One of my favorite birds: a Common Loon, checking out the nut with the camera.

A Redhead with his lady friend...

Thousands of Snow Geese have been passing over our region; I just love them. They're only here a very short time, then it's off to the Arctic tundra!

Gorgeous Shots TOB!!! Were you one of the photographers I passed this morning on Route 20 on my way to Cobleskill? ;-) I passed this pond/lake after Caz, after Morrisville somewhere there had to be at least 10 photographers out in front it and another three walking towards them. Must have been something good in that lake worth photographing!

I
Managed to get a hold of him, I have him in the duck house by himself so he's not struggling to keep up with the others. I need to find some sort of crate or cage or something to keep him in because that's going to be difficult to keep him in each morning. Anyway, I got a better look at his feet again after washing them off so I could tell what was dirt and what wasn't. This is what I am dealing with here... This is his right foot, the one he's hobbling around on and favoring. Looks like it could be a very early stage of bumble foot? This is the left foot, which to me looks like it already has a small portion of bumble foot on it: What should I do?!?
Your right, it is early stages, you might get away without having to cut out that dark spot. Give antibiotic, I think Tylan orally, or shot in breast. Put a drawing agent Like, Ichtamal on it. Gauze pad, then wrap foot in, vet wrap...its sold in most farm stores. It comes in rolls about 3 inches wide, stretches and sticks to itself so you don't need to use tape. Keep him isolated on a softer flooring. I have mine in a small coop with lots of shavings. If after a couple of days they don't go down, you will probably have to go diggin in it. They usually open up fairly easily, that one that is in the last photo, Then there might be pus like gunk inside you need to squeeze out & possible pull out a "plug like" thing, that is the root. Hopefully, you catch it early and don't have to operate. I'm going to uncover my goose foot today & hope its better. I don't want to go digging. PS if you do go digging, wear gloves, its a staff germ, you don't want to get it on you.
i forgot. Probably should soak foot first. Sorry oldshimers setting in.

So I drove up to Washington Mills on Wednesday to pick up a pair of Lavendar a Orpingtons and what was supposed to be silver partridge Silkies, they weren't but instead was giving 2 blacks, an in between blue and black and maybe one is considered silver partridge. I brought them home and gave them baths, (not that they needed it to much, just a little dirty feet) and introduced them to my other babies. I'm thinking of calling this lady back that I got them from and buying more from her. She seems to really know her stuff and her chicks are beautiful. I just wanted to say a quick thank you to her.:cd

2 weeks ago I went to TS and saw white Auracana chicks for sale. I explained to them that they were not Auracana's but they argued that they were. I bought 6 and told them that I would prove that they weren't. (The girl and I are friends through my shopping there, all in good fun) The next week that I went in there was a hand written sign that read white straight run chicks, clearance $1.00. So I now have 6 white chicks that are probably EE because they can lay any color egg but these chicks are quite stream line where as my own EE are usually more compact. Is it possible to tell what these might be? I'm thinking that maybe they are like the ones that were Super Blue Egg layers (like Armorfirelady's Edie and I have her sister)

Been a busy week, one of my twin grand daughters fell off her little bike and broke her arm. She was rushed to the pediatric hospital in Rochester, NY by ambulance for emergency surgery, now has 3 pins. Nothing breaks a grandmothers heart to see one of her own hurt. Even Pinky got a cast.

Sally8 so glad she is ok now poor little cutie!

One of my goslings hatched last night!

We are guessing she is a blue saddleback.

Pyxis it is adorable I want some where did you get the eggs from?

DH just finished our new coop.... We were going to spend so much buying a new one but he just built this one with 85% recycled material. Those were French doors off a old job.
Tell hubby nice job I love the way he used the door for a window.
