Bakingintherain: I've been doing the same from a couple of Boston Lettuce bulbs we just finished:

Do you just put the end in dirt or do you root it in water first?

Well I found this thread! I'm happy I found my peeps! I'm a newbie and I don't have my coop built yet. Right now I'm repurposing the crate that my piano was shipped in.

Humph...this requires some serious thought. Stony won again. Im going to have to dig deep. I missed a beautiful day and it was crazy busy today. Dh had the cheeps out today and they were very happy about that. I was greeted at the car by the terrorists when I got home.

Welcome to all the newbies.

Around these parts we get 3 to 450 a dozen for eggs. I ask only 3 as it covers my feed costs. Each area is different.

Night all.

Well I just performed a semi-surgery on my drake! I'm going to need DH's help tomorrow for the last bit of it. I just couldn't hold him AND pick at this thing at the same time any longer. I managed to the get the foot he hasn't been limping on cleared up, started getting at the smaller "sores" on his other foot and can definitely tell THAT is the foot that is bothering him. So since he was wiggling so much I didn't want to pursue any further with out the help of some more hands. He's in the shed tonight in a bin/cage since his feet are all wrapped up. Silkies aren't too happy about that!

did you wrap it in a towel ? make sure the head is covered too less wiggling ..( they go to sleep )

I just love repurposing !

All the chicks are so cute. I finally brought out my incubator as the temps outside are getting warmer. I learned last year without using a furnace (only wood heat) that I had troubles maintaining even temps, so I thought I 'd wait until later this year. I've been saving my Silkie mix eggs for a few days now because I want Sizzles. I have 2 already . It's a good thing I thought ahead as I found 1 dead today on the coop floor. No marks or feathers missing. I came in to get my knives to cut her open and DH had already taken it up on the hill. He normally never moves that fast and I can't outrun the 4 wheeler. I was so mad. I'm going to miss her or him. (Cecilia or Thor). The 2 that I had looked EXACTLY a like. I was never sure of Thor. (She/He) never crowed but I never separated them to see. Cecilia hatched eggs last year and then was attacked by the neighbors dog. I'm not even sure if this is the pic of the one that died. it never mattered to me before but today would be nice to know. Out of 7 Silkie mixes I routinely get 4 eggs daily.
