NY chicken lover!!!!

I just love repurposing !

All the chicks are so cute. I finally brought out my incubator as the temps outside are getting warmer. I learned last year without using a furnace (only wood heat) that I had troubles maintaining even temps, so I thought I 'd wait until later this year. I've been saving my Silkie mix eggs for a few days now because I want Sizzles. I have 2 already . It's a good thing I thought ahead as I found 1 dead today on the coop floor. No marks or feathers missing. I came in to get my knives to cut her open and DH had already taken it up on the hill. He normally never moves that fast and I can't outrun the 4 wheeler. I was so mad. I'm going to miss her or him. (Cecilia or Thor). The 2 that I had looked EXACTLY a like. I was never sure of Thor. (She/He) never crowed but I never separated them to see. Cecilia hatched eggs last year and then was attacked by the neighbors dog. I'm not even sure if this is the pic of the one that died. it never mattered to me before but today would be nice to know. Out of 7 Silkie mixes I routinely get 4 eggs daily.

I mentioned how much I loved the pic of this chick before I read the whole post. So sad! Sorry for the losses.

Glasshen ooh I hate mites, reminds me I have to get out there this weekend and start dosing all mine so they don't get them.

My chickens must sense spring is in the air as they have finally braved coming out in the snow. The silkies were the first ones to come out. The freeloaders have finally started laying again slowly but each day I seem to be getting a couple more than the previous day. Plus 2 of my ducks have started laying and the duck eggs hubby had for breakfast yesterday and today were fertile so I think I may collect some of them and throw them in the bator. Then I think I am going to set aside some of my silkie and orp eggs I have a splash roo over 2 lavender hens, 4 blue hens 2 black hens, and 2 splash hens, and I have a lavender roo over 3 lavender hens, 2 blue hens, 2 black hens, 1 buff hen, and 2 splash hens. I really want to hatch the chocolate orps but the hens haven't started laying yet.
Tonight I have to stop into tractor supply hubby has stopped me from getting chicks so far but I bet tonight I don't walk away !
Was thinking of you the other day. How are your chickens doing and are they laying? My thought was to ask what you're feeding them.

To everyone else if you're having problems look at what they're being fed. Not enough protein and or good feed can put them off.

I just did a good scan of postings.

1. I'm in Texas and it's not warm. My DD's computer is old and I can't post to here from their computer. It's not mine so I don't mess with it. Needs a clean up and an update. Runs XP. I'm at the public library. Grandson here for a sing along with Mr. Steve.

2. Went to county fair. No chicken show but they were judging rabbits by the trio and boxes of meat chickens. Not sure how they judge that. Grandson loved the goats/deer/llama/ cow petting zoo.

Definitely Farmers.

3. Welcome to all new comers. Hope you enjoy BYC.

4. DW taking care of chickens. Guess everything is okay. Hope if something does go wrong she doesn't tell me till I get home.

5. Brought the new PP mage. Dorkings highlighted this time. Things to note. They come in lots of colors, rose or straight comb and laying is 150 PA.
Point being on the egg laying is some keep breeds for cuteness but might not have the laying numbers they'd prefer. So if your girls aren't laying where you'd like it might be the breed and the line.

I don't know much about this area but I've noted the TSC and another feed store.

happy birthday sunnysideupstateny..hope you have a great day ..a cup of tea, a good book and a seat in the corner of the coop , reading to your flock ..have a good one ..

Aww Thanks!!! Yes, it is a lazy good book and tea day, but of course I am working.
I'm hoping the rain holds off till later so I can get outside and get started on my strawberry planters. It'll be a good way to use up all the pallets I have leftover from building my coop!

Those of you who have ordered from Stark Brothers, how close to the estimated ship date did they actually send your order? Mine was for March 31st, and still no trees :-(

I didn't know this could be done!  Aren't the roots lobbed off in the market, though?

Neat!

TOB I researched this apparently it don't matter you can do it with any heads of lettuce, celery, cabbage or some others if no roots but in a dish with just a little water for a few days change water daily then when it starts to grow a new plant put it in dirt .

Rancher I have missed your postings it is good to see them again! I hope your are enjoying the family and the warm weather down there. My chickens have started coming out side again even though their is snow but I think they got embarrassed because the silkies starting coming out first. My husband says the silkies were looking for the mother ship. I have started getting more eggs but no where near the amount I should but a lot of them did lay throughout the winter because they had lights but I think I messed them up when I swapped out regular lights with heat lamps during the subzero temps and they do look like they are molting now. If you are still looking to downsize when you get back let me know.
As far as feed I have always fed them the same feed from local feed mill it is a layer mash and it gets mixed with dumor layer pellets then fermented and if it was real cold they did get some scratch or cracked corn

This is a great idea; never thought of it until I saw Lynzi's pic. Thx, Nutty!
