NY chicken lover!!!!

Yay! I missed everyone this am!
I am whooped, got my new apple tree in the ground, built two strawberry pallet planters, only had enough plants for one. Not sure what to do with the second one now, maybe I'll post it on craigslist.
Ran out of soil for my tomatoes so I need to go get more, aaand I'm starting some rhubarb from seed.

Cass, Sorry to hear about your duck. That stinks they didn't even stop.

Ok, where's the wine!

I'm drinking it....

Beautiful weather and I end up with a stinking cold. Was feeling dizzy this morning, so wasted away on the couch. This afternoon after nap Hubby got me outside to brush out the Arab, at least one pony is mud, burdock and matted mane free now. He left for work so I raked the branches and giant pine cones on the front lawn. Probably overdid it, but at least little girl got lots of outside time this afternoon. Now I need to attempt to make dinner for the gremlin and myself. Times like this I wish we were closer to town to have food delivered, I'm ready for bed.
Cass-- I lost 3 or 4 hens to the road. Haven't had that problem since I got rid of the nasty roo that liked to lead them across the road. Instead now they wander off into the junkyard neighbor property.

Cass ~ I'm so sorry to hear about your duck, can't believe people can be so inconsiderate! Do you have any signs up in front of your yard? My neighbor across the street and I mentioned one time that maybe we should put a "caution" sign up for chicken crossing because hers tend to wander very close to the road and this is a 55MPH road. Luckily everyone stops, including the big tractor trailers but you never know when you're going to get that one idiot who just doesn't care at all.

Marq ~ Sorry to hear your son is moving so far away with his 9 month old baby. You'll have to set some time aside for some web chats. That way you be unknown/forgotten

Well I brought my polish hen in today after I got done making a breeder box for two silkies. Gave her a bath and just let her soak a while. Cleaned up her vent really well, cleaned up her feathers around her vent, and to my surprise it actually went back in on it's own after she sat in the bath for a while. Now I just have to keep an eye on it a couple of times a day to make sure it continues to stay that way.

Well, Its a beautiful day today. Spent the morning cooking lasagna & a cheesecake for my sons birthday. Next week he is moving to Arizona, so its most likely it will be the last birthday dinner I make for him....

My tradition is make everyone a birthday dinner with their favorite foods. To make it worse, he has a 9 month daughter that will most likely not even know us hardly...Yes, I'm upset over it...

Then with my 5 year old granddaughter, we cleaned out the patio, washed up the furniture, planted tomatoes & pepper seeds I saved from last year, and I am tired!!! Sat on the patio swing with her, talked about stuff, had a glass of wine, and am now waiting for everyone to come for dinner. I'm tired!

Hope everyone had a good day.

Oh honey, she'll still know you! We relocated from RI to upstate NY about three years ago. At the time, my youngest was 18 months old and had never seen my dad, due to a family squabble (long story).

Well when my dad and I made amends, he and his wife started coming up to see the kids twice a year. All of my kids, including the littlest guy, are still absolutely in love with their grandparents and know them very well.

There are lots of ways to keep in touch now, with Facetime and all of those other video things.

On another note...I'm fairly certain when future generations look back at this time in history, they will talk about the mobility of today's families. I know a LOT of families that have transplanted for work opportunities, more affordable housing (why we left RI), etc.

What a gorgeous day it's been! We dropped a large tree down in the bottom end. We were watched by 'Tripod' the deer. She was shot last winter and uses only 3 legs now. She has become relatively tame with us, we can approach within 20 feet or so. She has adopted our tall pasture as her home - I must try and get some good pix of her. Even the dogs have stopped barking at her now...

The girls were out digging up worms, sun bathing etc. they donated 7 eggs today. That seems to be a fairly constant number - not bad from 10 hens. Is it too cold/early to put 4 week old chicks outside in the sun for a few hours tomorrow?? The weather is going to be in the 70s' tomorrow (allegedly). Off to get some supper, see y'all later,

Hi Boskelli -

You call your unfortunate doe "Tripod", we call ours "Tipsy!" Sorry for the poor picture; I was zoomed out pretty far! More in common than just chickens and a love for birds -- apparently we've got handicapped deer in our neighborhood, as well. Anyway, we don't know the story on this doe, except there's a chance she is the same one I saw a year or so ago, following a small buck in our backyard. At that time, she had a front right leg that just dangled and swung like a rope. It was painful to watch her and I didn't think she'd make it. But chances are it might be the same girl that we see now. This doe has raised twin fawns and her weight is pretty good, considering the winter we had! I almost hope she is not bred again, because it must be extra tough on her to raise young ones. Anyway, I hope Tripod has a safe summer. Animals are so incredibly tough!

Ugh, Marquisella! That will be tough. My oldest is 16, but I already think about when he will leave for college and then wherever his life takes him. My youngest won't be all that far behind. So I can feel your sorrow!

You will have to make a trip out west in the near future to visit him and your granddaughter...and maybe the Grand Canyon!!

I've got a cold, too, Lapeerian, but mine's on its way out I think. I did some yard work today, as well. Who could resist! If I had a nickel for every stick and branch I picked up and threw or dragged to a pile, I'd be a rich lady! Today I brushed caked mud off my horse for the umpteenth time this week. Within seconds, no kidding, he rolled again. **sigh.........** Anyway, feel better soon. Maybe tomorrow you will feel better if you get a good sleep tonight. NyQuil !!!!

Oh, this is great news, Lynzi! I was hoping I'd see something like this from you today. Hoping her recovery continues.

I always wondered how you get the chickies to sit still in the bath. Especially if they've never experienced being immersed in water. I am figuring at some point in time, I will have this delight to look forward to with one of my own!

I know how it is. I moved to another country with my son when he was 2.5 months old. Stayed for 5 years, then convinced husband to move back.

My son is 43...not a boy, but my first and it still is difficult to say good bye. I don't like heat, so it will be hard for me to find a time to visit Arizona, when its not hot there, but not winter here...

Thank god my daughter lives near me, and I am close to her 3 kids, so it will help...I try not to think about it.

Well I think that's part of the reason I am so attached to this hen already. The minute I got her and brought her home I gave her a bath because she was kinda dirty. She was so calm and relaxed. Even this time around when I gave her a bath today, I gently placed my hand over her back, not holding her down at all and she just slowly layed down in the water. Almost like it was too good to be true that she was behaving this calm...Well when I've taken her out each time to blow dry her, she just sits there with her eyes closed like "Ahhh Yes, pamper me!" She is so sweet and beautiful and I think she knows it. She's just got this prim and proper attitude to her, I love it.
