NY chicken lover!!!!

Well, Its a beautiful day today. Spent the morning cooking lasagna & a cheesecake for my sons birthday. Next week he is moving to Arizona, so its most likely it will be the last birthday dinner I make for him....

My tradition is make everyone a birthday dinner with their favorite foods. To make it worse, he has a 9 month daughter that will most likely not even know us hardly...Yes, I'm upset over it...

Then with my 5 year old granddaughter, we cleaned out the patio, washed up the furniture, planted tomatoes & pepper seeds I saved from last year, and I am tired!!! Sat on the patio swing with her, talked about stuff, had a glass of wine, and am now waiting for everyone to come for dinner. I'm tired!

Hope everyone had a good day.
It sucks when kids move away and take the grandbabies, You will just have to go to Arizona for a vacation maybe when it is nice and cold and snowy.

Cass ~ I'm so sorry to hear about your duck, can't believe people can be so inconsiderate! Do you have any signs up in front of your yard? My neighbor across the street and I mentioned one time that maybe we should put a "caution" sign up for chicken crossing because hers tend to wander very close to the road and this is a 55MPH road. Luckily everyone stops, including the big tractor trailers but you never know when you're going to get that one idiot who just doesn't care at all.

Marq ~ Sorry to hear your son is moving so far away with his 9 month old baby. You'll have to set some time aside for some web chats. That way you be unknown/forgotten

Well I brought my polish hen in today after I got done making a breeder box for two silkies. Gave her a bath and just let her soak a while. Cleaned up her vent really well, cleaned up her feathers around her vent, and to my surprise it actually went back in on it's own after she sat in the bath for a while. Now I just have to keep an eye on it a couple of times a day to make sure it continues to stay that way.

Lynzi that is great news keep her in the dark for a couple of days so she don't lay I hope it stays in.

It has been a rough day here ...we slaughtered 3 chickens ..2 roosters & a older hen
I miss Sammy my blue Sumatra ..I didnt want them to kill him . He was a nice Rooster ...He never attacked me like skiddy did ( I dont miss him )
He crowed so much ..my hubby & son hated him . he was unhappy he had no hens ...he called for Luckys hens frequently .
My husband was afraid the neighbors would complain & we would be in trouble for having chickens .
TT misses Skiddy ..Lucky did his Roo come hither ..she came running then she saw it was Lucky ..she backed away .She has been running around alone most of the day .
It is alot quieter with just one Roo
...Lucky is much quieter ...The hens arent being grabbed all the time & trying to escape being mounted by the Jr roos . And Lucky charging in to save them
Lucky isnt chasing & attacking the Jr Roos & they are flying every which way ...Sometimes straight at me
But I still miss Sammy

Sorry about your Sammy. I have a few roosters and they are usually good but today they were terrible crowing at each other but it don't bother me and most of my neighbors have chickens so it don't bother them either and they are not close so they probably don't even hear it.

Morning!

I'm catching up while everyone else is sleeping. Early mornings are the only time when I have both hands for myself.

Last weekend I raked sticks up in the front yard. When I went in to feed Nora I found a tic on my belly. Ewwww! I'm lucky in hadn't bit yet. I didn't expect to see one yet because it had still been cold out. I had Nora outside yesterday and she loved it. I'm glad it's starting to be spring. My girls have been stir crazy to play outside.

Everyone is stir crazy - my roos are all fighting - so now they are in large dog cages and I have all separated into small breeding groups. It was earlier than I wanted to do that - but oh well.

Even my horse decided she wanted to run around and took off down the road ... fortunately she likes the neighbor's horses and when she ran over there - I closed there driveway gate and was able to get her with no pressure.

On a spring cleaning note - the chicken netting is all untangled and stretched out on the ground ! Staking it up tomorrow so they can free range a longer time ... not just when I am out with them.

Today I go around and check on all my berries, fruit trees and nut trees ....

Hi Boskelli -

You call your unfortunate doe "Tripod", we call ours "Tipsy!" Sorry for the poor picture; I was zoomed out pretty far! More in common than just chickens and a love for birds -- apparently we've got handicapped deer in our neighborhood, as well. Anyway, we don't know the story on this doe, except there's a chance she is the same one I saw a year or so ago, following a small buck in our backyard. At that time, she had a front right leg that just dangled and swung like a rope. It was painful to watch her and I didn't think she'd make it. But chances are it might be the same girl that we see now. This doe has raised twin fawns and her weight is pretty good, considering the winter we had! I almost hope she is not bred again, because it must be extra tough on her to raise young ones. Anyway, I hope Tripod has a safe summer. Animals are so incredibly tough!

Wow! That is amazing! I guess the front leg just dropped off eh? Tripod was sitting quietly in the yard while I was running the tractor back & forth, but the minute she heard strange voices (neighbors) she moved away to the bee hives and sat between them! Who says animals aren't smart?

I left all my e-netting up this year, like an idgit - thankfully it's all working and seems to be just fine after being buried in snow all winter. ;)

Cass so sorry about your Duck ..people can be so inconsiderate

It is fine ..are they mostly feathered out ? just watch for signs they are cold ..like huddling my 4 week olds have been out today & 2 days ago

Yep - they have most of their feathers - however, we have a very brisk breeze blowing right now. If it warms considerably I'll put them out for a while. Got to catch the little buggers first!

Morning all. Everyone was antzy to get out this morning. I let Junior out to run around this morning. He is alone and is burning off energy running around his fathers coop staring him down, etc. All the boys have love on their minds and the girls are putting up with it. Getting lots of eggs and picked up a couple more egg customers yesterday. Today is lockdown for the lf eggs in the big bator. Means I have to set up another brooder box this morning. Next weekend is silky lockdown. Have to go work on the empty coop as well and get it prepped for the brats. They are coming up on four weeks and quite the handful. Feathering in nicely and I am already able to tell boys from girls by the combs. Lots of boys. I am hoping its not the year of the boys again.

Have a nice day everyone.
