NY chicken lover!!!!

Featherz and others ...

How do you take care of your netting - have any others left it up ? I tend to really REALLY tangle the things and spend a whole day on the unwinding - so I'd love to know if it lasts well up and in place ... I also would look at it as a little added predator protection surrounding the coop for winter hungry animals.

Anyone had it up mulitiple winters ? and where do you store it ? I didn't have my shed finished - so mine spent the winter outside anyway - but just rolled up ....

Lots of "swooping" might be Tree Swallows (they are a stunning blue and white).  They will readily use bluebird boxes.  We have a pair that fledged their young 2 years ago and then returned last summer.  Hopefully, they'll be back.   If you've got Bluebirds setting up in your boxes, lucky you.  Mine never seem to stick around, though they are here now, singing their pretty song and eating bugs off the trees.

Yes, TOB, there are some bluebirds and some tree swallows. I think the tree swallows have claimed the house near my raised bed. I was over there neat ending and checking on the garlic, and they were dive bombing me. Ungrateful things. The house near my kitchen window is still being discussed. The bluebirds have been inside to check it out, but the tree swallow was sticking its head in a few minutes later. The bluebirds seem to regret that the giant neighbors are so close, even though there is glass between us.

Metella, I got my fence down this year and it was pretty easy to put back up. When I took it down I carefully put all the vertical posts on top of each other with the fence looped uniformly to the side. I had wanted to then hang it so that two supports would support the posts horizontally and the loops could hang down. But my request for this were not met, perhaps next fall.so I just draped it over a box and it sat there all winter.

This chicken netting...it's the electric fencing stuff, right? How much does it cost, typically? Right now, I'm free-ranging my chickens, but my kids are still wearing poop kickers outside. Soon, they will revolt against footwear, and there's nothing worse than chicken poop feet running through your house. So the chickens will have to go back to their pen. I'd like to enlarge their space a bit.

what about poop flip flops ? ones just for outside ?
We got non electric netting for $ 12- $ 14 a roll at walmart last year .
To keep them out of the neighbors yard & out of the garden .
Havent looked for it this year yet

They won't keep them on, lol. They might wear them as they're running out the door..but then they'll get on the trampoline and take them off and forget about them. Or the oldest boy insists on climbing trees barefoot because, as he says, "You can't FEEL the tree well enough with shoes on, Mom!". I told them they have to wear something for now, because the ground is still muddy. But its a losing battle, lol.

I use 2, and take down each fall. My dh is a sticker for getting it folded up "just right" so he does it by himself...ok by me...hehehe

But, no matter how he folds them up, they are still a little messed up. He always blames "somebody" did it...

I kept my netting up all thru winter and it's still in good shape. I don't electrify mine, it's used just as fencing. Mine is now sectioned off I to pens/runs for the three different coops which by the way I'm beginning to think was a bad idea -getting into all these different projects and what not. I cannot stand all the crowing that has been going on! It's so annoying! The minute they all stop one starts up again and then all follow. Ugh

The electric netting works out to be about a buck a foot, give or take, depending on what size you get. Plus the expense of the charger, ground rod, etc. I love mine - keeps the foxes and the dogs out. I used about 500 feet of the stuff! :) (15,000 volts bzzt). Charger I have was about $100 (Parmak Mark 8).
