NY chicken lover!!!!

What a gorgeous day it's been! We dropped a large tree down in the bottom end. We were watched by 'Tripod' the deer. She was shot last winter and uses only 3 legs now. She has become relatively tame with us, we can approach within 20 feet or so. She has adopted our tall pasture as her home - I must try and get some good pix of her. Even the dogs have stopped barking at her now...

The girls were out digging up worms, sun bathing etc. they donated 7 eggs today. That seems to be a fairly constant number - not bad from 10 hens. Is it too cold/early to put 4 week old chicks outside in the sun for a few hours tomorrow?? The weather is going to be in the 70s' tomorrow (allegedly). Off to get some supper, see y'all later,
It is fine ..are they mostly feathered out ? just watch for signs they are cold ..like huddling my 4 week olds have been out today & 2 days ago

Well I think that's part of the reason I am so attached to this hen already. The minute I got her and brought her home I gave her a bath because she was kinda dirty. She was so calm and relaxed. Even this time around when I gave her a bath today, I gently placed my hand over her back, not holding her down at all and she just slowly layed down in the water. Almost like it was too good to be true that she was behaving this calm...Well when I've taken her out each time to blow dry her, she just sits there with her eyes closed like "Ahhh Yes, pamper me!" She is so sweet and beautiful and I think she knows it. She's just got this prim and proper attitude to her, I love it.

Too sweet! I can't imagine mine sitting placidly through a bath, let alone a loud blow dryer!

Have you posted a pic of this hen yet? Maybe I missed it or I'm forgetting?

Cass ~ I'm so sorry to hear about your duck, can't believe people can be so inconsiderate! Do you have any signs up in front of your yard? My neighbor across the street and I mentioned one time that maybe we should put a "caution" sign up for chicken crossing because hers tend to wander very close to the road and this is a 55MPH road. Luckily everyone stops, including the big tractor trailers but you never know when you're going to get that one idiot who just doesn't care at all.

Marq ~ Sorry to hear your son is moving so far away with his 9 month old baby. You'll have to set some time aside for some web chats. That way you be unknown/forgotten

Well I brought my polish hen in today after I got done making a breeder box for two silkies. Gave her a bath and just let her soak a while. Cleaned up her vent really well, cleaned up her feathers around her vent, and to my surprise it actually went back in on it's own after she sat in the bath for a while. Now I just have to keep an eye on it a couple of times a day to make sure it continues to stay that way.

put some honey on it ( I know it is weird ) but it will help her heal .

Maybe you can get a pic of your "tennants" this spring / summer, Gramma. And we can try to clinch the I.D. for you!
I will try they are so teenie
Mine get the sink treatment ...Water is warm & soothing ...Push them down gently they usually cooperate .
However when they stand back up they may want to fly out !! Fun ! water everywhere ...be prepared with extra towels

I think so...she's the one in my avatar pic. Here's an up close and personal

Lynzi this bird is sooo pretty!

Cass I'm so sorry to hear about your loss of your duck.

Today Beak A Poo made his first trip outside. He went to visit the old people. He or She would make a great therapy chicken. Put some smiles on the old folks faces. It got introduced to another indoor chicken, a rooster. The other roo is a bachelor and I don't think it actually knows its a chicken. They just looked at each other. :) So happy!

Lots of "swooping" might be Tree Swallows (they are a stunning blue and white). They will readily use bluebird boxes. We have a pair that fledged their young 2 years ago and then returned last summer. Hopefully, they'll be back. If you've got Bluebirds setting up in your boxes, lucky you. Mine never seem to stick around, though they are here now, singing their pretty song and eating bugs off the trees.

Some will stay around through the winter, just like robins.

Cass, this is a shame -- I'm sorry!!

The only birds I ever see around here in the winter are crows. Bluebirds or robins would be so nice to actually have some color with all the white that we end up with on the ground
