NY chicken lover!!!!

Got mine all untangled - have all the little breeding "pens" inside the perimeter - and will let one set out each day - so they may get 2-3 days of outside each week - but they are all pretty much open to fresh air and nice views.

I do electrify mine .... and put it surrounding trees so they always have some basic protection against hawks - and netting does seem to work for dogs and I'm crossing my finger hungry momma fox. (yes, I know - vixen).

Got a little egg from my Millie D'Uccle :0 so cute - Cracked it open and it is fertile !

I want to get another coop up and ready for Buckeyes ! and already my back is killing me. Now I know why I should have been doing exercises all winter ..... No season off.

Anyway - I'm scouting craig's list to gather materials for the Last I swear the Last coop to be built !

I'm not going to do any breeding next year - I agree with all the crowing and even though they are close - the extra time as they all spill their water in 5 minutes ....

Evening all. A delightful day spent outside by all. My silkies were mad that they had to go back in so I could let the terrorists out. I got the empty coop all scrubbed down on the outside and ready for a touchup of stain and paint. The inside will also be stripped and cleaned and painted as well then I will hit it with permethryn to make sure that anything that might have taken up residence dies. Dh got the run all fixed up that goes to it. He also built the little brats a playpen today so they went outside for the first time. They loved it and needed no instructions on how to be chickens. Good thing I threw the shadecloth on top as these littles were gettting some serious air! They werent back inside their brooder for 4 minutes before they were out cold. The terrorists felt the need to supervise me as I was scrubbing down the empty coop. Almost stepped on a couple of them and of course my vinegar water was inspected. It was a beautiful day. If I wasnt such a responsable person I would call out tomorrow and stay home and paint and stain! Hoping to hear some hatching sounds soon from the bator.

Hoping this cold is breaking already, but spent some time outside. Gave little girl her first riding lesson as hubby rode the other horse. Then I got to take a couple laps around the yard, the weather was beautiful. I agree with Pharm, tomorrow would be a great day to play hookey.
Cleaned the stinkey little chicks, here they are waiting to get back in the brooder.

Everyone is stir crazy - my roos are all fighting - so now they are in large dog cages and I have all separated into small breeding groups. It was earlier than I wanted to do that - but oh well.

Even my horse decided she wanted to run around and took off down the road ... fortunately she likes the neighbor's horses and when she ran over there - I closed there driveway gate and was able to get her with no pressure.

On a spring cleaning note - the chicken netting is all untangled and stretched out on the ground ! Staking it up tomorrow so they can free range a longer time ... not just when I am out with them.

Today I go around and check on all my berries, fruit trees and nut trees ....

we got quite a bit of weeding and garden planning done today, it was so nice to have some time not stuck inside got the stinky rabbit out to his outside digs today and the quails upgraded to his inside cage, they are loving it! did a little walking around and my rhubarb is starting to crown whoop!

They won't keep them on, lol. They might wear them as they're running out the door..but then they'll get on the trampoline and take them off and forget about them. Or the oldest boy insists on climbing trees barefoot because, as he says, "You can't FEEL the tree well enough with shoes on, Mom!". I told them they have to wear something for now, because the ground is still muddy. But its a losing battle, lol.

mine won't keep theirs on either, i am lucky if i win the clothes battle lol i just hose them off before they enter the house

also i candled the eggs quickly (will do a more thorough job later) and there is definite growth in sofias egg, about 7-8 branterbaer (name spelling?), and a couple blues, air cells are still mostly wonky though, but a few or them look pretty good!

I have to be honest. I LOVE the sound of a rooster crowing. My Barred Rock, Pseudo-Bob (long story on the name) comes up to the back door with his ladies and crows and crows all day long. Pretty sure he's asking me to throw out treats. ;-)

Everybody around us has chickens and other livestock, so crowing roosters are quite common. Mine hears the neighbor's crow the the left, right and behind. You can tell he's listening...one of them will crow and he'll perk up all interested and then crow himself. And then the other neighbor's rooster crows...lol.

My absolute favorite though, is when the cockerels are JUST learning how to crow. Oh my word...so funny.

When hubby and I moved here three years ago, we moved out of a suburb in RI...hadn't really ever heard roosters crowing, etc. Well when we first heard the cockerels practicing we were like, "WHAT in the world is wrong with that rooster???" So funny.

So you guys put up new coops pretty readily. For us, expense is a big factor in why we DON'T put up more coops. Plus, I want my coops to enhance the look of the property, kwim? But from what I can gather, there are some pretty inexpensive ways to put up a coop?

Hubby and I were thinking of adding a couple of turkeys for Thanksgiving. But I'd want to keep them away from my chickens. Which would mean another pen and coop of some sort.

And maybe I might like to do quail. And if I put a small coop over by our swamp/marsh, I could add ducks.

So many possibilities. :-D

Wondering if anyone within 2 hours of Saratoga NY would have some fertile eggs I could buy to use for 2 classroom hatchings.-2 doz or so. Can be mixed. Need some with light colored shells so we can candle easily.
Had trouble with my computer so just getting on. Need fresh eggs by April 21 or so.
Can anybody help?

Evening all! Checking in from work. Today was beautiful but thanks to an error on behalf of my English teacher, whom I want to strangle, I had to spend the whole day rewriting an essay I had worked on for two weeks. Got it done though. And I did find some time to sneak out and spend with the chooks. Drone is shaping up to be a great rooster and is taking right after his father. When I was tossing out pizza crust for them today he was calling all the hens over to eat his pieces. He's terrible at mating though and watching his attempts is hilarious. Honey usually manages to knock him off before he even gets to that point though. Silly boy needs to learn to try when his daddy is NOT right there.

Metella, Bleu gave me the stink eye today while I was changing his water. I'm so glad that the coop should be done by Tuesday or I'm worried he would start planning my demise. And Baking, not sure if you saw my post about the quail on the other site, but would you be willing to take my one lone baby back? I feel bad for it all alone with just the bantams to keep it company. I'll try again with quail at some other time.

I was outside all day putting a new "roof" on the coop. I got a billboard for free for it and the used some clear plastic for the ends. It's actually attached in both these pics but its so clear you can't tell. And it's super thick, like windows in a pop up camper, so it def will hold up to our weather
