NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning Everyone! My hatch did not go so well. Out of 23 eggs I have 6 Chicks. 3 Easter Egger, 2 Olive Egger and1 Lavender Orpington. I had bought a dozen Lavender Orpingtons from Jody At Hink JC and they were not shipped. I added 10 eggs from my flock and 3 were not fertile. At day 18 all were developed with good air cells. They started pipping day 20. One lavender pipped and died 6 hours later. Next the EE and OE pipped and hatched. Last pip was from the Lavender and it hatched out perfectly. Then nothing from the rest of the eggs.I waited another 4 days. No movement- float test showed all low floaters.Day 25-.Eggtopsy showed cell in tact developed chicks encased in membrane with some yolk still present- Not sure why some hatched and others didn't. As far as I know the bator temp was constant 99.5 in a room with little traffic 70 degrees and no drafts. Both plugs were removed. Humidity at lock down was 65-70%. Bator was only opened briefly to remove hatched chicks (twice). So I am grateful for the chicks I have and I do have one little Lavender -I just feel really bad for all the chicks I lost. They were in an automatic egg turner till day 18 and candled 3 times-day 7, day 14 and day 18. Any feedback is appreciated. I have not had a broody hen this year and wonder if that is the best way to hatch chicks.

Chickenblessed---if this link works, click on it and listen to what Dr Peter Brown has to say about dismal hatches. If it doesnt, look up the chicken whisperer. He has a radio show on blogradio and Dr Brown is often on it discussing various chicken issues. The one on hatching is number 890 in the archives. I found it very helpful in understanding why I have had such poor hatch rates this year. It really has been a bad year for many of us hatching eggs and for broodys as well.

Morning all. I hope everyone was safe during these storms. I see that some up near syracuse lost their lives in a building collapse. My prayers go out to their families. We got hit with heavy rain and wind last night and lost power. All is well though. At least its a bit cooler today. Tomorrow looks to be the perfect day for processing and canning. I told the boys to enjoy their last day today. I told the ladies to get off their lazy butts and start laying me some eggs.

Off to another long day at the pharm. Everyone have a nice day!

I actually have bad luck with broodies. For example, I put 10 eggs under a hen, she sat like a rock, tried to bite me to death. Then another hen decided to sit with her. Well, unless they are silkies, and these weren't, they ended up breakinng all the eggs....sigh...

Did you open any of the eggs to see what they were like? If they didn't pip the air cell, and when you tilt the egg you see liquid movinng, that means they had too much humidity and drowned when they tried to pip the inner membrane. I would imaging that is what happened due to the excess humidity we had lately. Although I don't add any water to my incubator, I had several drown due to to high humidity....very frustrating since I lost about 12 geese...

Placed an order for 8 birds last week, they shipped from mypetchicken (from meyer) on monday, and they've been stuck in cleveland ohio ever since. The post office won't answer the phone, and this is the second time this exact same thing has happened to me. Really frustrated because I was supposed to have them yesterday and they are still in cleveland today. Hope i don't end up with dead birds from this. Last time I'm ordering from my petchicken, and probably going to avoid meyer because I don't know who's making the mistake.

Yeah, live and learn.... I started out with hatchery chicks and such ... but after learning more - I can usually find a type I want locally and pick up .... they are usually hardier and often cost just the same if you factor in shipping.

I do have a few nice birds from my hatchery order - but now I'll always contact people from this list or my local area for any further birds ... unless I see a can't pass up hatching egg order to infuse some new genes to my flock. :)

When I was just married I TRIED to cook lentils in a pressure cooker...given to me
for a wedding present. EXPLOSION was the result and lentils went all over the
ceiling and all around the kitchen area.

I gave the pressure cooker away. DON'T USE PRESSURE TO COOK.
REGARDS, Aria

Another storm coming through now.

My prayers are with those in Smithfield who lost so much. 4 died from the tornado yesterday, a mother and her 4 month old baby girl were 2 of them. It's heartbreaking. I hug my girls everyday and tell them I love them. You never know what life is going to throw at you.

Hope everyone here is doing ok with these storms that have been happening lately.

All is well in Oswego County. We got hit pretty hard in our area, lots of trees down, power was out from 6 until 3 am here, still out in some places, but we didn't get it hit as hard as Some of the other counties. My heart is breaking for the lives lost and the devastation in Madison county. :( I hope everyone on BYC stayed safe. We are tucked away in the pines, so I had no clue how bad the storm really was until the neighbors called to check on us to make sure we were ok, their kids trampoline was literally bent in half and they lost two trees. I didnt get out in time to put my chickens away, but ran out after the neighbors called like a freak to check on them and they were looking at me like I was crazy, needless to say they were barely wet and fine!
Have a good after noon all.
