NY chicken lover!!!!

A nice draft free coop for them for winter. If there is anything that I have learned it is that they handle the cold much better then they do the heat....Coop needs to be draft free, but well ventilated to let the moisture out and some fresh air in. And a way to make sure that they have access to fresh water.

There's a great article on ventilation here: https://www.backyardchickens.com/a/...-go-out-there-and-cut-more-holes-in-your-coop

On my coop, I made tons of vents. Some vents have vent covers (just a piece of wood with hinges and a barrel bolt) so they can be open in the summer and closed in the winter-time. I am thinking about putting some plexiglass in them so that the girls will still get some light. Light is pretty important to egg-production.

Hey there, I am a Upstate New Yorker up by fort drum. I have just started with the chickens.. We have 8 of them... I am looking for great ideas to how to keep them warm during the wonderful winter months. My girls are not laying yet, they are about 4 months old. Any advice on anything ?

Hi from St. Lawrence county. Is nice to see someone farther up north :D Ours did good in a shed we built for them. It had ventilation under the eaves. Water is the biggest problem up here. I would look up ideas for keeping water warm and find the best that's suited for you.

It is one of those metal wall units, bottom boxes are about 18" off the ground. The boxes are only big enough for 1 hen, she has end up with broken eggs under her as other hens climb in. I have tried moving her to the upper row that is mostly unused. In June we tried moving her to the Eglu, which broke her till now. She won't stay in the coop boxes, even though that is where we place her every night. I'll ask Hubby tonight, what time will you be coming to Cortland?

Can't find the original post with pic, but definitely NOT Aussies.

Can't see combs to say if their ee's or not either.

I'm posting here before Craig's list:

For sale: dual purpose hens. 2 partridge rock hens 2 years old. Lay 5-6 times per week. 1 BCM/EE mix. 1 year old Proven excellent broody and raises chicks with no problems. Lays 4-5 eggs per week. $5.00 each. All healthy & fed fermented grains.

Trying to thin down my hens for winter. I live in Hamburg,NY, south of buffalo and will drive any hour to meet up with someone.

Chickens live in unheated coops in Alaska. Make your enclosure (coop) draft free on the area they roost and plenty of ventaliation to keep the ammonia from building up in any season.

My neighbor heats her tractor cuz her chickens are pets....I live 1000 feet away and don't heat anything....actually leave a window cracked and never shut the pop door across from it....both flocks survived the same winter...my power bill was about $50 a month less however. (heat lamps pull a LOT of power)

If the EE's have the same parents they could very well look almost identical.
