I do the exact same thing most of us do - I start the day after Thanksgiving by decorating a christmas tree and drinking hot chocolate ! I do this because it is a joyful part of our culture.

Then I mail out my christmas cards to friends who have moved far way - giving them a remembrance letter of the year and why I think of them. My household is too small for us to switch roles (which is a Saturnalia thing) but feasting and food and fellowship is the same. Saturnalia lasts for 2 weeks ! Plenty of drinking - which I go light on. So it is very nice that my DH and I always have christmas off It is also a holiday for playing jokes on people ... but again, my household is too small to go all the way with that.

Saturnalia is a very ancient Roman Holiday - celebrated way before they even had Ceasar march to power ! Families exchanged gifts, spent time together, feasted, as it was a more rigid society - switching roles was greatly amusing .... and someone in the family was crowned King of Saturnalia in each family each year .... but again, my household is too small for that part of it. No work went on - and it was just a fun joyous time of year.

I really like the Saturnalia idea! As a nurse I always volunteer to work Christmas 'cos I don't have kids. In our house Christmas is a moveable feast - so maybe we should just call it Saturnalia!

Pyxis, Would very much like to see a photo of your 5 gallon waterer. Is it plastic?
We have a larger waterer we use but cannot use when there is freezing.

We keep a water heater in ours and it does not hold 5 gallons. Could you post a photo

Food for thought.

Keep in mind when you are on forums such as this, companies have folks, follow these forums too.

Point being, when you see someone touting the virtues of medicines or not, they might very well work for the company that sells the product.

Meaning? They have ulterior motives.

That doesn't work, you should use this, yada , yada , yada. Don't go stressing and ordering some product you can't get or costs lots of money, because a member here is pushing it. Read books, magazines and google it and look for reviews.

I usually look for reviews on products I might be interest in.

EX. I was going to buy some asphalt type roofing for my runs, but in checking things out, found it doesn't last long and required regular maintenance.

Take it all with a grain of salt.

Funny ... I actually used to do that when I worked in an office - I don't have kids and I know how special it is for kids -so I always just figured (and gladly) that I would work any day before and holiday hours to let them go without guilt.

I already have feed in stock from a local source including layer mash and am setting up with Poulin grains and will be a Poulin feed dealer. Hope to have all the chicken supplies in stock and will be selling chicks this spring also. We figured general store and feed were great with all the Amish I have around me I know they have already preordered 100's of baby chicks for spring. So hopefully this goes good.

Hubby got me a new puppy for Christmas he is an AKC golden Retriever who I have named Stanley and he is the biggest baby. Now am looking for a female mini schnauzer and a female golden retriever.

I already have feed in stock from a local source including layer mash and am setting up with Poulin grains and will be a Poulin feed dealer. i agree ..i really like this idea..i am building some next summer for sure ..i no were theres a farm that used to have one that ran under route 62 from jamestown to warren pa..i like the fence idea for around the garden ..i built a tractor last yr ..way to big and heavy to move by my self so i tore it apart .but these would be alot easyer to manage i am thinking ..and i can connect them right to the run they have now ..

I know that farm too!

I have 5 tractors. 2 are over 10 years old, they are big and bulky and I only use them for meat birds. This is probably their last year of use though because of my new design.

I have 1 5 x 10 triangle shaped tractor that will be the new meat model.
I have 2 4x8 triangle shaped tractors that are going to be my new laying and breeding system as soon as weather allows. These are light enough that my 8 and 10 yer old can move them.
