Hi everyone..

So cold here in upstate NY near lake George... I have Old English bantams that I brought into my
garage from the Coop to warm them up until this weather changes.
Just glad to be apart of this....and enjoying my little friends.

Of course once they're done gorging themselves, they clean it off one another. I'm just glad I moved the ducks in with the roosters during the winter, as they would made a huge mess in the hen's coops with their heated water bowls. I enjoy the Muscovy's, but they are much easier to care for during the summer when they can splash all they want without covering everything with ice!

Hi everyone..

So cold here in upstate NY near lake George... I have Old English bantams that I brought into my
garage from the Coop to warm them up until this weather changes.
I have individual cages for them so I matched up the Roosters with available hens so that I have
them under control for fertile eggs.
Just waiting for this weather to break, so  we can go on with hatching our eggs.
It seems the bad weather stretches way down in the south also.
I am really enjoying our bantams compared to other breeds I have had.  So attractive, and polite.
These guys are more like pets.. I can't wait to have more little ones.
I  also have 3 call Ducks that are very friendly.. One Male and 2 females...They R AWSUMMM!!
Just glad to be apart of this....and enjoying my little friends.

Welcome! You're only 15 minutes from me I went to high school in Granville. I love the OEGBs too - one of my favorite ever birds was an OEGB. She was a random bantam picked out of the bantam bin at Tractor Supply. She'd fly up on my shoulder every time I was in the yard, just to hang out.

Well, today was a terrible day. A weasel got into my coop. Lacie is fine, but it got two of my welshies (both females so I still have the drake thank God) and a bunch of hens. It also got all of my roosters except one, and they all went down fighting. It got Honey and his son Drone, which I am devastated about. Honey went first, it looks like. It also got Phoenix, my beatiful EE roo, and the last rooster who is alive killed it, so it won't be back, but it got him really good, and the poor thing ended up in the snow, and his feet were literally frozen solid. He doesn't look good and even if he does make it, he's probably going to be handicapped. I'm doing all I can for him though - he's a good boy and he almost lost his life killing the weasel so I'm doing all I can. At least now if he dies he will be warm and cozy.

Have his feet unfrozen but now they're swelling up, of course. Not quite sure what to do about that. I'm gonna put aspirin in his water for pain. I got the blood cleaned out of his feathers too and he ate two scrambled eggs for me. He's a bit on the thin side since he was low rooster on the totem pole and the others blocked his access to food so I'm gonna try to fatten him up. I'm also gonna worm and dust him - he can use all the help he can get. I've also put a heating pad under his tub to keep his feet toasty. Any other suggestions are appreciated.

@Pyxis Wow! That's terrible. So sorry. Weasels are in my opinion the worst predator, they can get threw small holes and even chew their way into a coop. When I was a kid a weasel killed almost all of my fathers flock, even the meanest RIR rooster I've ever saw. Just took their heads off. I can't believe your roo killed it! Probably helped having more than one roo. I hope he heals up alright.

Im going to chickenstock this year. Let me know if any of you want heritage rir chicks, straightrun. It will help me decide how many eggs to set in my bator.


Heres a pic of The Duke--my heritage rir roo. Crappy phone pic but he thinks hes the man! Both he and his brother Rooster Cogburn are really nice roos. Easily handled, good with the ladies and neither has ever challenged me or dh, Excellent boys. The ladies are nosey and always underfoot but great layers and all have handled this weather like its nothing.

I am sorry for your loss. That must have been so scary.
