NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi there! Welcome to BYC! Sounds like you are already a chicken lover! Lots of cool people and chickens here!

Oh, I definitely am. DH and I got our first 6 last year (and 6 ducks). We lost a couple to predation and one just up and ran off. We've since moved and have a nice big, secure 8x8 coop with attached 8x8 run although they are free range during the day. The dang chicken math got me this year. I went to buy 6 and came home with 13 then 3 weeks later, another 6!

I started with 7 last year...took 7 more...losst them all. Then by november bought my first incubator and...BAM...instant addict. I have to be over 130 now...All little guys under 6 months with only one trio laying. I should count again...But, I have been growing out some super cool breeds and can't wait to see them develop. That chicken math will get you!!!

Purpletie3 , was it you bidding on a rare chick special from GFF? If so hope you won. Tell us more about the breeds you are growing out now.

It was. I didn't win that one. I did get the Appenzeller Spitzhaubens though. I bought one of their rare chick before and I got some cool light sussex, isbar and supposedly barbezieux and lyonnaise. I have a few of their lines right now...Sulmtalers...total sweethearts. Bielfelders...Isbars....Svart hona's and some legbars. All healthy and cool chicks. I really like them a lot. My favorites are the Hona's!

So I figured I'd post a pic and see if anybody can tell me what's wrong with this chick and a couple of his siblings who seem to have the same issue (but not as bad as him).

Anybody have any ideas? It seems as though the feather shafts on the wings are preventing the feathers from actually erupting. And there aren't many feather shafts erupting on the back at all.

There's another chick in this group that, since hatching, has breathed very heavy. If you pick him up, you can feel his heart beating very rapidly. Faster than the other chicks. He's smaller than the others but is growing.

I expected him to pass some time ago but...he's still going and is otherwise healthy!

But I can't figure out these bald chicks. And btw, googling bald chicks...don't recommend it!

And in case anybody is wondering what a silver partridge silkie roo over a silver sebright hen would look like:

Of the four that hatched, three are speckled like this and the 4th is speckled too, but darker. They are neat. I was surprised that they have regular feathers, given how many of the silkie features they DID retain.

Sweetpea, I hope someone with knowledge will chime in here. I know nothing, but wonder if there is some naked neck genes in there that could have morphed to other locations. Perhaps as time goes on the feathers will come in? Or chicken saddles? You see, I really do not know anything, but perhaps some others do. I know you are worried.

I sure hope there aren't any naked neck genes...lol! The roo is my BCM...he is the only rooster I have with the big hens. The hens are BCM, Barred Rock, Australorp, Speckled Sussex, EE, or Buff Orpington.

Hey folks...chick question.

Some of my chicks hatched (almost a month ago) with some patches of down missing.  I figured it was from the hatch and they'd fluff up fine.  Well they fluffed up, but the patches remained.  On one or two, pretty much the entire back is naked.

Now that they are feathering, I'm noticing that they're still not sprouting feathers in those patches.

What the heck is wrong with them?  Why are they naked?  And what does this mean for bringing them outside?

Sounds like they could be partially scaleless or are carries of the scaleless gene. If you check out the NN thread a couple other people have them and they hang out there. And I would totally be interested in getting some eggs from you when they are grown. I have a soft spot for the weird ones :p

I have had chicks like that. It seems they just take longer to feather out. It was that way with yamato gunkei and barnevelders. Now with my brahmas I see the same thing. It's usually the males too. Here are few pics of my blue partridge brahmas. One is a runt but you get the idea.
