I still haven't gotten my peas in, although we did get green and yellow beans in along with the lettuce and chard. I had the same of one weekend frozen, next weekend hot and dry. Most of our stuff goes in Memorial weekend because we still have frost, so keep telling myself that Im not that far behind.Dry like it was I try to water twice a day, early in the morning and before dark. I didn't water enough and they didn't seem to be growing. Planted late seems like we went from frozen ground to hot and dry. Peas do best in the cooler spring weather, it usually snows on ours a couple times, snow and heavy frost doesn't hurt peas, but you can't plant them when the ground is rock solid frozen. They are usually done by time hot summer hits. Spinich does best early or late summer into fall also, cooler weather. I've never grown kale before I guess it's the same. Swiss chard will grow all summer, cut it down and it grows back, chard is supper yummy. Funny thing is our chickens love spinach but don't seem to eat chard? They even love dandelion greens. Don't know why they don't like chard.
I meant hens sitting on eggs.
I just got mine tilled yesterday, so now it is a mad dash to get in all my plants. I have been growing most of them upstairs, but will need to plant the seeds for the others (beets, carrots, beans)..Not to mention have to put up the fence...that is an afternoon all by itself.... Any one want to help? He made it bigger then it was last year too, and no I didn't ask for it bigger..It was over 1100 sq ft...now I think that it is closer to 1200..I still haven't gotten my peas in, although we did get green and yellow beans in along with the lettuce and chard. I understand the prophylactic response...but, what a bummer! I was looking forward to the poultry barns this year!Found this posted by New York State Fair:
ANNOUNCEMENT: The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets has issued an order banning all live fowl competitions at the Great New York State Fair and at all county fairs in New York, Commissioner of Agriculture Richard A. Ball announced today. The order is the direct result of the continuing spread of strains of highly pathogenic avian influenza in the Midwest. Current Influenza Strains are No Threat to Humans.
At least they announced it early I suppose. 4-H groups that raise meat birds/turkeys are going to be hurting, many already have the poults started. They rely on the Market Sale at County Fair to fundraise.
