NY chicken lover!!!!

I think it is good to not have the poultry exhibit. I think it is big business for a handful of people who bring large numbers of birds, but is not what I have always thought a state fair should be. I think it should be regular people, like US should bring our best birds ... And with the problems they have had when there was no outbreak, it is good not to have such a large gathering of stressed birds. Just my opinion.

I went to the State fair for the first time last year. I was very disappointed with the quality and apparent health of the birds. I too, think it's wise not to stress these birds further by exposing them the a possible deadly threat. One bird dies - chaos.

Well, the cracked cemani egg has internally pipped! I left the tape on and will only take it off after external pip because I worry that without the tape the force of the pip could crack the top of the egg off, since the crack is almost all the way around the egg.

ANNOUNCEMENT: The New York State Department of Agriculture and Markets has issued an order banning all live fowl competitions at the Great New York State Fair and at all county fairs in New York, Commissioner of Agriculture Richard A. Ball announced today. The order is the direct result of the continuing spread of strains of highly pathogenic avian influenza in the Midwest. Current Influenza Strains are No Threat to Humans.

At least they announced it early I suppose. 4-H groups that raise meat birds/turkeys are going to be hurting, many already have the poults started. They rely on the Market Sale at County Fair to fundraise.

Everyone will be hurting a lot more if AI makes it to NYS. People should consider NOT doing chickenstocks until the out breaks are over......

WOW - so when I think about watering every other or every third day when it hasn't rained - that is way not enough ???

Do people really have time to water twice a day and still work and do chores and such ? I must be lacking the superwoman genes !

I do not water everyday. Watering everyday can promote short roots. I prefer to water every 2nd or 3rd day...with longer watering or with a sprinkler.
