NY chicken lover!!!!

You may remember I'm reading back issues of Mother Earth?  Here are a couple of interesting things from 1973 issue and the advertizements you might find interesting.

A WATER  BATH CANNER FOR $6.10  THE LARGE QUART SIZE.

A 7 QUART CAPACITY PRESSURE CANNER FOR $41.00

FINALLY HERE'S A TRIVIA QUESTION.

THERE IS AN AD FOR THE "BIG STINKY".  WHAT DO YOU THINK IT IS?

A. A pattern for building an "Out house".

B. Another name for Rancher Hicks.

C. A specially designed fly trap.

D. A uniquely designed meat smoker.

Anyone care to offer a guess?

Fly trap

Interesting article - I especially love the part where they talk about price hikes......

Good evening all,

I have 6 chicks about 4 1/2 weeks old. They Buff Orpingtons and fully feathered. I know many are not fans as they feel it's too small but we have a round top urban chicken coop with a run extension. I do plan on allowing them to free range after I establish the coop and run as their space. I've had the chicks out for full days with no heat lamp but have not left them overnight yet. I put some stone around the perimeter or the run. Do you think the run is secure enough for our area to keep the coop open at night?

If they are fully feathered, they should be ready, but here tonight is going to be reallllly cold, frost warnings and all, so I would not have tonight be their first night outside. I am not familiar with that coop, and don't know your area. Do you have coyotes, fox, raccoons, weasels, snakes...wild dogs...everything likes chickens. And use hardware cloth, never chicken wire, as the latter is easily ripped.

I am with Glasshen. If there's an opening not secured with hardware cloth then it really isn't secure. Lock them up each night...that way you can rest easy knowing your chicks are safe. Take it from a gal who learned the value of hardware cloth the hard way...Whole flock wiped out in my run that was secured with chicken wire...

Good luck with the chicks! Enjoy!
