NY chicken lover!!!!

The chicks are doing much better. The older one is out of chick jail and they have been together all day without too much fighting...

On unrelated non chicken news..My sister could use all the prayers that she can get right now. My mom just called to tell me that my sister has been admitted to the hospital. Her lung collapsed again. They have put in a chest tube. The doctors told her that it might happen again, but no one thought that it would happen again this soon. The way the doctors describe it, she has a "blister" on her lung that has made it weak. They would normally at this point take her in for surgery to fix it, but they are not going to do it because she is pregnant. They don't want to stress the baby...So please keep her in your prayers for me..
prayers and we'll wishes being sent your way.

Boy wish they were near me...
I am now feeding grower for the higher protein, I don't think the young ones were benefiting much when I was feeding just layer, the growth wasn't up to snuff in my opinion. I have oyster shell free choice for the layers and haven't noticed any problems with the eggs. I could have supplemented protein with the layer, but figured this was easier.
The giants and sussex I have had separate from the laying flock for awhile on higher protein, but I still have some young in the big coop.
I am now switching my young C. Rocks to layer, because they're beginning to lay. I always feed 20% Dumor until they begin to lay. 16% layer is not enough for even the adults. I've never had the molting I've experienced this year. I'm going back to the 21% layers.

Feather fixer is 18% and I've been giving the moltling flocks this. My EE's always laid eggs even now with the cold. The only one laying in that coop now is Big Delores. She just started back up with the feather fixer.

Can we get an address to send her cards. I'm sure it will do a lot to help her know we're praying for her. Maybe just here name and the address to the hospital.

My normally beautiful well dresses spitzhauben boys look like muddy disasters and my white leghorn girls are now a drippy smeared brown color. Oh the rain does VERY bad things to pretty chicks.

On other news, I got 13 eggs today as well as the last 4 days. I have eggs for all my holiday cooking without having to buy even 1. I love this. Now to build a turkey enclosure for spring so I can work on no more store bought turkey's. Yay!!! I'm officially 100% addicted to birds.

Are you planning on those giant white turkeys? I can't say anything bad about them, I've helped raise them, grow quick and super meaty, HUGE, and NOT!! like cornishX chickens that look like they are going to die....Had a white giant turkey two yrs old that laid like crazy, couldn't snip the head, she was too sweet.
Only problem with them is they can not and do not breed, all artificial. I watched a 'Dirty Jobs' episode on it, I'm NOT interested....
If you are looking for heritage, breedable turkeys, I've done some research, this place sounds good to me, and I've had many on BYC say the same, never seen so many breeds. I found them looking for Holland Whites, they have them, the start of the giant whites of today, but heritage and breedable...
Don't know now if I'll try them, these white jersey giants are supposed to get up to 18-20lbs as capons, we'll see what happens on the spring hatch.

I've done the production white turkeys as well. The were super fun to raise, very social birds. It was a sad day when we processed, but they gave so very much delicious meat. Knowing they couldn't reproduce naturally made it easier to bring them for processing, but also had me wondering about a heritage breed option. Do u know how many weeks it takes a holland white to get to processing size?

I just wanted to post this here:

It's really long - it's a post I just put up on my work in progress website for my farm. I didn't want to copy it down here because of the length, but it's about the horrible experience I've had with the PO today. Just wanted to share with you guys because it'll make me feel better and you guys will understand better than anyone how I'm feeling, if you want to take the time to read it.
