You sound a lot like me. I have 5 kids and the property around my house is u shaped and owned by someone who won't sell. I looked into several houses in our area and nothing worked out so far. We rent now but not quite ready to buy. Some of the houses we looked at that are larger actually had a lower heating bill because they had better windows and insulation. Everything is oil heat here too.

We are looking at another place this weekend

Its hard to find a home that will suit a larger family these days. There aren't many 5-7 bedroom houses on the market! We would like 5 bedrooms, and 2 office spaces. I've been hoping we could swing an addition for a while now, maybe this year. Newer houses have much better windows and insulation. We've got a couple windows that really need replacing this year, the cold blows right through them. But the to-do list is almost never ending when you own a home, especially an older one.

How much space does an emu need?

I won't get one this year, but I imagined one running around my yard and how much the neighbors would enjoy seeing it.

Did you see the baby emu on the rare breeds sell swap? Super cute!! I don't think I'd hatch an emu without having a plan for it afterwards though!

I did. That's what triggered my research. Baby emus are adorable. Big emus are a challenge because we haven't repaired our barns. The coop barn will get some work this year, but not enough to add an emu.
