NY chicken lover!!!!

Hi guys. I'm Peggy and I live about 20 miles south of Ithaca, NY. Right now I'm down sizing my girls for the winter, but usually have about 25 to 35 chickens. Fell in love with Blue Cochins, they seem to handle our weather very well. I have a variety of different chickens, BR, Cochins, Royalle Faverole,EE, NHR, white Giant, Wyandotte, Shaver Red, Buff Orp., Austrolorp,Speckled sussex, that's it for now but am always adding more!!!!!

WARNING GRAFFIC -
TiTi my Sumatra got left out side and I think something may have attacked her . I heard a ruckus ..and went out to the coop . and there she was waiting / roosting on the ground . I picked her up and and 4 of her toe nails were pulled off and bleeding .
She was wet and cold . I thought she might be going into shock .
So I brought her in and gave her a warm baking soda soak and blow dryed her feathers.
Bandaged her feet . Anyone know if toe nails grow back ?.

It may be related ..to ..I think we have another RAT ..
i HAVE fake eggs in the hen house ..Yesterday morning there was not a single one in there ...no where in the coop either View attachment 1262698 View attachment 1262699
I had rats getting in one of my coops last fall. I was wondering if they could steal eggs, then they stole the golf balls from the nest boxes. I'm sure the chickens didn't hide/eat them.

So Beer can, tell me about your turkens. I am interested in starting a turken flock.
Always thought they were the ugliest things I ever saw and never wanted them :lau
A few people on a meat thread kept saying how great they were so I had to give them a try.
Now I say they are the most awesomest birds ever!! Lol!
You get over the look pretty quick, and the chicks are the darned cutest!
My favorite birds now lol.
I got 15 from Cackle two yrs ago, and have hatched my own out of them a couple times. They are not bothered by the cold at all, first birds out of the coop when it's sub-zero. No problems, very hardy birds. The roosters didn't get any more frostbite than any other breed I've had, little on the tips of the combs, hens nothing. They lay very good, the hens are as friendly as silkies, and I don't make pets out of my birds and they still follow me around when feeding. I did have one bad rooster. Did have one set and brood her own hatch last spring.
And if your into processing, of course they are easier to pluck/half the feathers, more naked than they look the feathers they do have cover up a lot. No 'hair' either, none to singe off.

Thanks for the info. Would you be willing to sell me some hatching eggs if I came to pick them up? (Whenever they start to lay good.) Do you have all colors or are they all white?

Oh no, poor TiTi, that looks like a painful injury, hopefully she does OK with some TLC. Sorry don't know if toe nails grow back, maybe you could put an enquiry on the injuries thread? Hope you get the rat, if that's what it is.

All 5 of my girls actually came out into the run yesterday with the warmer temps here, and I heard lots of dramatic alarm calling, and commotion, loud enough to have me running out in the slushy snow in my slippers to see what on earth was going on.

I have seen cat pawprints in the snow across our driveway, front of coop and off into the woods several times recently. I guess this was the first time it walked past the pen when the chickens were out. It was already at the edge of the woods when I got outside, and ran off as soon as it saw me. Not sure if it's actively stalking the chickens or they just happen to be on its regular route.

Has anyone here had problems with feral cats attacking chickens?

I have heard other people have had problems with cats .

I been thinking about Ti Ti 's injury ..I m pretty sure it wasnt the rat ..
As she wouldnt have been near the coop if it happened there.
I think she was roosting under our deck ..when something bit at her feet
She has no other injury on her
I t may have been the Stray cat we have around here
or the opossum ..they both wander by at night
