NY chicken lover!!!!

Good Monday morning all:

For putting water into your incubators, see if you can get you hands on a 60CC syringe and a breeding pipette. The pipette is over a foot long, and most of the time 60CC is more then enough to bring up the humidity.

My wife surprised me for my birthday. For the last year I have been hearing that I should pair down the number of different breeds, but this weekend she did a little research and asked if she could get me some Wheaten Maran Eggs..... Sure thing Sweetie!!!! 2 dozen should be arriving mid week.

Had a fun time yesterday. I have eggs that go into lock down on Wednesday. I plugged in the hatcher Saturday night, and the basement was starting to smell Sunday morning. Funny to me as I cleaned very well the Hatcher after the last hatch. Smell all around, hmmmm nothing is coming from this. Opened up the vent on the incubator and I almost got knocked out. One of the eggs was oozing. I had to take the turner with eggs in it out and wash it. It was that or my wife was going to make me put the incubator in the garage. The cleaning worked, and he is hoping that nothing happened to the eggs while being chilled for 5 minutes.

Hope everyone has a great Monday!

LOL, that was my worse nightmare about using an incubator. We just hatched our first batch without a stinker, boy was I relieved!

Great tip about the pipette & syringe.

I stressed about opening the bator until I watched our broody hen and saw how long she stayed off her eggs for her personal needs. We had 22/24 hatch. One was not fertile and one died between day 5-7. And we opened quickly during lockdown several times.

Ok so I know people have recommended NOT getting silkie chicks from hatcheries, but what about other breeds? Like Buff Orpingtons or Bantam Cochins? Would I still be disappointed as I would if I ordered silkies?

Well I am sure the other eggs will be fine. Look at it this way, what choice have you got? You did candle right? I usually wait til day 10-14. That way with my bad eyesight I hope I don't miss something. Shipped eggs of course iffy at best. No matter what the seller says they may be older than you know.

The garage is most definitely the WRONG place for and incubator. Unless of course it's unused and heated. Even then I personally wouldn't bother hatching if it's the only place for an incu. Remember you want a steady room temp of 70-80*

Once again CM has given me a reason not to like them.

They will be having a sale on Chicken feed BUT only at the Spring Expo in Rochester. The last time they has a sale like this I had to prepay.

I realize it is a corporate office decision but how do they expect to complete with TSC? I would hate to see them close, but what are their goals? They could certainly give TSC a fight if they merchandised Poultry feed better.

But as I always say, such is life.

Rancher, I know you keep your room temp high when you are hatching...but let me tell you what happened with my recent adventure into bator hatching.

I bought that little bator....cost like $20 with shipping....it's molded plastic, no insulation at all. Has hollow legs to put water in. Cat tipped it over and the eggs were on the floor for a while. Put them back in. We heat with wood and the furnace is set to come on when it hits 62*....soooo my room temps can be anywhere from 62 - 85....and the bator was on a small box near the floor so it probably never gets anywhere near the high the thermostat reads. I still got 50% hatch rate...which is great when you only have room in the bator for 2 eggs....I will admit that the 7 watt bulb kept it a constant 100 degrees when I checked it...but I didn't check it in the middle of the night, only after the fire was started, etc. (creature comforts before chicken duties, sorry) So I am not sure that the room temp has to be as high as you keep your room....as long as the incubator has the power to keep the internal temp constant, it shouldn't matter what the room temp is...below 65 probably isn't a good idea, but most people keep their house 65 or above.

can we see pics of the roos please??

Will take some decent ones tomorrow. I definitely think the rumpy Araucana roo will go to auction. He's pretty and he's fine with his hatchmates, but he's not letting me integrate the smaller chicks that have been caged with them for two weeks. He's the only one that picks on them. grrr. The EE roo seems to be calmer. May lock them both up and see if I'm able to let the smaller chickens out.

Just went to our local tractor supply store and guess what they HAVE SILKIES! I'm so upset because after all this searching around I just go into the store for supplies and BOOM there they are and I can't even buy them! Why can't it just be the end of May already!
