NY chicken lover!!!!

Horsekeeper--Sorry I haven't had any experience with LF cornish. Would like to though.

This week has been hectic. My oldest had to see a pediatric dentist and she is going to have to be knocked out to have her teeth fixed. And since the doc isn't a participating doc for my insurance we have to wait for the preapprovals. She has an infected tooth and hasn't been sleeping good plus pain when eating. I'm very tired and I just found out that I'm going to have baby number 3. Both my girls are coming down with a croupy sounding cough.

We're setting our first hatch of the year tomorrow in the Hovabator. A mix of breeds we have here at the house. Golden cuckoo marans, BLRW, EE, OE, Del, and Buckeye. Now that I've been collecting eggs and the weather had been cold I've only gotten 2 eggs from the buckeyes this week.
Congratulations!!! Here's to an easy pregnancy and delivery!!

I forget, how many buckeyes did you hatch out and how many Hens? How many eggs do you normally get with them?

The problem with telling the kids that their unwanted food goes toward animals, is that they will then go out of their way NOT to eat the healthy food, and give it to the critters! Last year my mom, who works at the schools here, started collecting the apples and veggies that the students were throwing away. Once they figured out that she was collecting these unwanted, thrown away apples for my chickens, the kids that normally ate their apples an veggies started giving them up just FOR the chickens! We definitely didn't want to encourage the kids to get rid of their healthy food, so my mom started collecting trashed food more subtly!
That thought crossed my mind, too. I'll have to figure out how to play this.

CONGRATS!!!

Tab--congrats on number 3! Its a unique number but a good one. I know as I had three. Anything after that is just more.

Adorava--baby pics are expected!

Rancher--speachless and laughing as usual!

So I made it through work on thursday, being extra diligent in counting and reading labels. Dead guests dont pay. Came home to freeze locking up the cheeps and pulling waterers in. Up very early for work today (cheeps werent even up) and let them out and ran water to them. Froze again when I got home tonight gathering eggs and locking up. I think the cheeps will be happy when chicken daddy gets back and helps with chicken duties. Means more scratch for them!

Night all.

More questions from the ever-curious newbie, TOB:

During these cold months, do you folks have some kind of dusting set-up inside the coop? If so, do you remove it for outside dust baths during the warmer seasons? I'm wondering how the inside dust affects respiration quality inside...

Also, if you're going to see a mite or lice outbreak, is there a particular time of year that the likelihood is higher, or is it just an all-seasons pain in the arse?

THANKS EVERYONE!

They still use their regular dusting site ..Under our back deck .
Little did my husband know when he had it built ...that someone else would have it as a favorite spot .
We put black plastic under there so it is just dirt .& It always stays dry under there ...In Rain , Snow or Sun .
Im think of enclosing it plastic next year to keep the heat in some for them
In all weather they go under there & roost & or Dust Bathe (there is a I___I hanging Board under There)( It supposed to be for storing extra boards , etc) They think its for them ! & we dont use it ) Sometimes I put some wood ashes in there as well . I have been useing cardboard ash as we always have boxes for my business that we dont use anymore .

Chick Princess - We will have to compare ..I am planning to get chicks from my Australorp roo & 1 RIR hen , 3 red sexlinks .
Maybe we can compare results later ..I cant wait to see how the colors mix in the chicks !

Congrats Tab and Trav from Matt and Jen! Hoping for that boy, but health above all.
I had an infected wisdom tooth in college, no fun at all. Hope all goes well for her.
In the mail I received American Baby magazine again. January was 9th month, February was One-month-old. And then this week I recieved a free gift from Similac, a newborn starter kit. Did I miss something?
Maybe you're next! lol

CONGRATULATIONS, Tab, on what will be the newest addition to your "human flock."

Get on your prenatals -- might help with your tiredness, but as you know is great for Baby.

Hope your little girls feel better all across the board. Did you try a little Orajel for the tooth pain?

Good luck with the incubation, too!

Lots going on at Tab's house!!!

She let me use the oragel on her once then refused it ever after. The doc gave her amoxicillin for the infection. Right now I've been taking kids chewables because its what I have, at least they taste good. Thanks!

Ginny-- I hatched 3 hens and 1 roo (buckeyes from you). They seem to be molting and with the cold we've had brrrrr! I was getting at least an egg a day now they will skip a day or 2 then lay again. I'm going to up their protein and hope that helps them.
