Anyone know if Annie is still hatching. She was in Albany area and has B/B/S orps. I got some last year, end up with a blue and black hen. Black roo I just rehomed this morning- too many Roos for me. Beautiful birds. Tab and Trav have the splash roo.

I am here and just have been insanely busy with the family. So, right now we have:
Americauna - black & blue
Australorp
Araucana - rumpless and tufted
porcelain D'Uccle
lots of backyard specials

India blue peafowl
red-golden pheasant
normal & white Mandarin ducks
and a lonely male Temminck Tragopan (hoping his mate will be here BEFORE breeding season)
pure/papered Nigerian dwarf goat kids due April
Nigerian/Pygmy (Pygorian?) kids due April
I will be hatching once they actually get laying again and will have hatching eggs available too. Hope everyone is doing well in this crazy NY weather and now that I have chatted with Cass I will certainly make my silly phone give me notifications when we post here! Miss you all!

Quick question,

has anyone ordered eggs off E-bay? Any advice?
I'd be cautious... just me though. I'm sure others have had success! Make sure they have very high positive feedback.

Welcome, neighbor! Canandaigua here. :) I've got Red Sex links, production reds, tetra tints and black australorps. I've been happy with those breeds so far.

Is there any truth to the rumor that packages marked fragile actually get handled more roughly? I remember reading once that someone did a test and the packages they marked fragile actually had a rougher time in shipping than others did. They chalked it up to postal workers getting annoyed that the package was marked fragile, like it was accusing them of not being careful with packages, and as such they handled it worse.

I will say I've bought hatching eggs from the BST section on here and it went great. All the eggs got here fine and they were all fertile except one. Only one other one didn't hatch. Ten out of twelve on shipped eggs wasn't bad at all.

I will say at the station I worked at packages are tossed. Not treated gently. They simply don't have the time to handle things as delicately as we'd like. On the other hand I've seen packages so poorly wrapped you would not believe.
Some people use Scotch or masking tape. Some put pictures with glass in bags.
So marking something fragile does not guarantee it will be handled any differently than another package. Though I will confess I've never seen hatching eggs come through.

Hello Rancher,

As always, I gobble up your shared tips and info like a starved mutt.

haha!

I had already planned on putting some DE down under the shavings in my coop, so I'm really happy to see you recommend this -- it reaffirms my thinking, which eases the newbie doubts (of which I have many)!

On the Eprinex, though: because I occasionally plan to throw some scratch down directly on to the (deep) shavings within the coop, is it safe to dust the floor with Eprinex? Thanks for confirming. I don't want to poison my girls, even if it means a miteless carcass, LOL!

Thanks, sir!

PS: where do you buy Eprinex? The feed store?

Exprinex is a pour on wormer for cattle. I use an eye dropper between the shoulder blades my like you would a cat or dog. I also do this a night with the head light while they are on the roost. I just go down the row and apply it to each bird. Chickens don't see good in the dark. Neither do I. It's a good thing too. I once turned on the light and there was DW with cold cream smeared all over her face and hair in rollers. Nearly gave me a heart attack.

The head light of course allows me to measure the right dosage. You can buy this at the feed store and it may seem expensive but I store it in the fridge. You can get the eye dropper at the feed store too. ( Or just take it out of the babies ear medicine bottle. Don't forget to rinse it out when you put it back.

I also put it in the grandkids milk in case they pick up cooties at school. No one knows so it's ok.

Seriously I haven't had a problem with mites that I've noticed. An ounce of prevention you know.

Several of my family members worked for a company that transported mail from Central Sorting Office to local Post Offices (and back) and YES, they used to play football with packages marked FRAGILE. (my own family members...shame on them)

You can curse the Post Office workers all you want, but independant contractors move the majority of our mail. There is little to no standardization of hiring criteria for drivers of the trucks that move the mail from Post Office to Post Office. (You must have the proper certification on your license for the size truck you drive and that's about it.) So you are apt to get people who are drawn to the solitude of driving a truck and all the social ineptitude that that might involve. (Some of them are normal, but they tend to be more toward the anti-social side of society) Now you label a package "Fragile" and put it out by the mail bags. "Ooops....I didn't know that would break" can be heard on the docks as the box hits the back of the truck's box. Since they are independant contractors and hire people to drive their trucks there is little to no way to figure out who broke the fragile item, so there is no accountablity for the driver's actions. So they play foot ball with packages.

If I were ever to ship eggs I would mail it overnight, and mark it "LIVE ANIMALS. THIS END UP". It would stand a better chance of being handled by Federally employed workers who are held accountable for their actions with regards to the mail they handle.

Then I would say a prayer. Buy lots of insurance on the package. And kiss it goodbye.

While I can't disagree with much of this, I'm not sure the insurance would help. If you send anything Express mail, you're already covered for the first $100 of value. Plus if the package is late you get a refund. SO if the seller charges YOU for postage and it's late make sure THEY file the claim but send the money to YOU. Only one seller ever did this for me.

Just make sure you know the rules of insurance because the eggs may NOT be covered.

I don't have any, but if I did I'd recommend my Birchen Marans. They've been laying very well all winter. With no light nor heat. They're amazing. I'll also recommend the Sussex from Marq..whatever. I've got one hen from her and if she's any example of what they are like, they are good layers too. I only have the one and she is in with the BM's.

I will say in all fairness that they are out everyday. Not run, nothing. I just open the door to the coop and they do whatever they please.

This isn't the coop, their is right behind this one, but it's very much the same. You get the point. I don't know why but they must be content cuz they lay very well. Big snow and I got 4 for 5 hens. The Sussex usually lays one.
