NY chicken lover!!!!

TOB--my neighbors already know me as the crazy chicken lady who talks to her chickens and acts rediculous when predators are around and I scare the you know what out of them when I go out in my nightgown and rubber boots to let the cheeps out in the am (only when its warmer, not now).

Rancher---I would love to invent exploding squirrel food as I hate those tree rats. Serves two purposes...gets rid of the theiving rats and the entertainment value is priceless.

So I come home and try to use my microwave only to discover it has died. It was a montgomery ward over 30 years old and huge. I guess we have gotten our moneys worth out of it. Nobody makes them as good any more. Now I will have to go buy an energy efficient one. Since its down to dh and I, a smaller one will be okay I guess. Going to make that low calorie pound cake tonight! Oh---who turned off the heat outside?

We have a new commercial one at school and good garden o' peas it heats my dinners up so hot they boil over. I have to reduce the minutes. There is such a thing as too hot.

Now we did get a new one a short time ago. I told DW to get one that has the rounded back to it for easy cleaning. No nooks and crannies. I do the cleaning of the micro more than anyone else. I always look for how easy something is to clean when buying things. Unless of course one is a big slob and doesn't care.

I have to say some of these new refridgerators have gotten out of hand in size. Some of them are crawl in to clean models. Bigger than some of the apartments I've lived in. IMO, they should be less deep. I hate when I can't see all the way to the back. Put mirror on the back wall and you'd think someone was in there on the other side. Like the Twilight Zone or something.

Yes, I CAN imagine it. Way too funny!! I imagine it would be incredibly effective, but probably would go over with consumer safety folks like a fart in church.

Why hasn't anyone invented a huge RAT TRAP design for larger predators. Can you see that bird coming in and landing on that dead chicken and BAM! I would so buy one if they made it.

There is a video of where this woman made a fake Quail to study the mating dances. I have no doubt you can find it on PBS. org or Youtube. It was hsysterical. She sent the thing out on a track and it fell over.

just in the thinking stages here. But.... we are talking about adding turkeys to our flock. a homestead bird, broody etc. Narragasett's were strongly suggested on the heritage poultry thread.

We are looking for a turkey that if we keep a breeding trio, the next spring they will sit and hatch and raise their own. And Narragasetts fit that bill. Anyone have any? Do you like them? etc.

Just thought I'd throw it out there even though we aren't ready. As when I was thinking of adding broody born runners to our flock this thread pulled through!

Still need to build housing.... so still in the planning stages.

Stony, I have fifteen heritage crossbreed poults coming this spring from Porter's. You're welcome to a few if you want them! I'm opting for the heritage-type birds because I want them to breed naturally. Given that they're from experimental breeding groups (Porter's likes to create new colors), they should be decent parents.

thanks! I'll talk that over with my wife. So you are looking for exactly what we are in a turkey. Low maint, bird

Yep! I'm not big on the idea of the broad-breasted birds - great feed conversion, but they come with an expiration date. I'd rather have the slower-growing birds that will be self-sustaining.

I can't speak on technical specs, but when I was shopping the Parmak had better reviews and the digital display so I picked that one. Only complaints I saw was that it was noisier than the Zareba. Supposedly Parmak has better customer service, but can't speak to that. They are probably both fine. :)

Sold. I have it in Amazon wish list. Peeps have to raise me some money first!

Rancher---dont get down. I had a hawk hanging around last fall looking for an easy meal. I kept my cheeps locked up for a couple of weeks in their coop/run and freeranged them only when i was out there. it finally gave up and went away. It does pass by every once in a while to see if it can get lucky but i am always there to discourage it. I know there is a pair of falcons who live in the area as well and they have been more brazen in their flyovers, skimming the tops of the trees, but again, I am the deterent. I wonder if you made a scarecrow of yourself and put it out there if it would help deter them?

Havent heard the coyotes lately but dh told me this am that a rabid fox was shot by a cop in the small town below us. Hopefully it is an isolated incident.

We got a little snow last night so of course there was all kinds of whining and complaining coming from the coops this morning. Bunch of babies. Told them to put on their big chicken panties and get over it otherwise they werent getting all the goodies I saved from the chicken I roasted last night. Had to buy a chicken to roast as I am out of my own. Guess thats another reason to fire up my new bators!!! Anyways, I have all the drippings and gizzards and skin to mix up with some other stuff and put out there later. I just hope I can get out of the run in one piece!

Off to the pharm for another funfilled day.

A rabid fox was shot a few miles from us as well.....not looking good
