NY chicken lover!!!!

Quick question (again) on the electric fence. What happens when a chicken touches the wire? Can you prevent it?

I heard a raccoon out there early this morning.

Couldn't find it with the spotlight.

I already have $29 in egg money saved for the fence. Getting there! It's funny. Some days we don't sell any, then other days we sell out.

I find that chickens are so well insulated(feathers) they don't really feel it unless the step on it. This does not usually happen, but on occasion a pole will fall down(I have really rocky ground and sometimes I am not diligent about pushing the poles all the way in).

I got it wrong it's 10 eggs - but I usually end up using 12 or so since I use up all the itty bitty eggs. One egg should be about 1/4 cup, so I just go by cups instead of actual eggs.. Found here on the forum, not my recipe..

OLD FASHION POUND CAKE

3 c. sugar
1 lb. butter, softened
10 eggs
4 c. plain flour
2 tsp. baking powder
2 tsp. vanilla

Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy. Add eggs and beat well. Measure and sift flour, baking powder and dash of salt. Add flour to mixture in several parts. Stop mixer, add about 1/3 of the flour, start mixer back slowly, then mix fast JUST UNTIL MIXED. Repeat until dry ingredients are all incorporated. Scrape down sides after each mixing. Put in 10 inch tube pan that has been greased and floured. Bake at 325 degrees for 1 hour and 20 minutes. Cool in pan for a few minutes before removing.

It's in the oven. BUT it mentions salt (not listed in the ingredients) and no where does it say to add the Vanilla. I am now looking for that Lemon Sauce stuff.

If I wanted 3 of these chicks ..how would this work ? Would I get 3 non sexed chicks ? different breeds or the same breed ?
What eggs are you planning to give to them ?
Would I come to your place in Albany ? or meet at a neutral spot in Albany ?
If anyone else in the Syracuse area is interested in some I would be willing to bring some back for them
We can meet somewhere if you wish, cuz my house is not close to anything that resembles an interstate Highway.

It is hard to "sex" chicks. Next to impossible with some breeds before they either lay an egg or crow....but I can give it my best guess on pullets, if that is what you seek. And you can have whatever you want....Only pure breed I will have will be Ameruacanas....rest will be barnyard mixes....All my hens are good layers.....the Ameruacanas mature late, the rest mature around 24 weeks.

Chicken Mentors,

How do you usually transport chickens back and forth?
I was considering finding a used (wire) dog crate. Then I saw a neat homemade device: someone took a large plastic crate, like you would use to store anything from kids toys to Christmas decorations. The center of the snap-on lid was cut out and re-lined with wire mesh. I thought this might be a cheaper option that would be both easy for me to carry myself and also easy to clean.

I'm beginning to think about transporting my new birds in the spring, and also starting to purchase some things in advance so I don't take a hit all at once.

Thanks for your suggestions!

Amy, I used 1 cup sugar to 1 cup lemon juice( I used the stuff in the green bottle,,Price chopper I think) and boil until it becomes syrupy or until you get dime sized bubbles. As soon as the cake comes out of the oven, poke many holes in the top, leaving it in the pan and gently spoon syrup over it. I ended up using the first batch up on just the top. When I took the cake out of the pan to do the bottom I ended up making another batch of syrup.

So, If I had to do it again, I would start off using 2 cups sugar and 2 cups lemon juice. Follow the same procedure by poking holes(sometimes I use a fork, or sometimes wooden chopsticks). then spooning syrup on top and bottom(while out of pan).

Wrap for a while in plastic wrap to allow lemon syrup to penetrate. With 2 cups of syrup, the pound cake is Very lemony...you get a delicious pucker!! I let mine sit for 24 hours because even though I made it for valentine's day for my lemon lovers, there was banana bread still to be eaten. This recipe, was very easy and delicious. Whoever posted it thanks!!!

I hope yours comes out as well as mine did!!

BAKER-RANCHER,

Rancher, the lemon syrup with directions.

I have a large dog kennel that's good for hauling around a couple of full-sized birds (which reminds me that I have to get that back from my husband's co-worker who got the chicken dinners on the hoof from me). The guy who sold me my Japanese Bantam pair had a neat idea. He takes cardboard boxes, cuts holes in the sides (like windows) and covers the holes with screen. They're sturdy, ventilated, and disposable.

I usually use a large laundry basket and throw a towel over the top. (large towel) For chicks I use a cardboard box because they don't want the ventalation, they want WARM. Once I used my cat carrier, but it was really too small for the two pullets I put in it, so I went back to the laundry basket/towel set up. However I haven't transported for much more than 15 miles cuz I like to "buy local".

Unless you have a truck you don't want something with a wire bottom, cuz they will poop....riding tends to scare the poop out of them.

And their poop when traveling has that more acid. "scared the poop out of me" smell.....well it does to me anyway. Smells worse in a car, than out of........
