NY chicken lover!!!!

Hey albany peeps, how are the roads out that way? Need to go to the train station and don't know if I can get away with the Smart car. :) It's nice out this way, but we heard from the mothership (my main employer) that the snow was still going in Albany..

Well now chin up. From me the chicks are free so lets hope you find a new job real soon.

To bad there isn't a praying emoticon.

Rancher

I was in TSC today too. Saw they had Campbells. My plan was to get some but I really need to build a coop for them. And give it more thought.
i feel so bad about this, if you pm me with your email, i will pay for your chicks and a bag of feed to get you started.

I got bad news the otherh day. My company downsized a bunch of people and I was one. So I will have to put off getting my flock started until next year. I won't have the $ to do it right now.
if you pm me with your email, i will communicate with you and somehow send you the money to pay for your chicks and a 50 lb sac of starter as well....I really hate to see plans get loused up like that, Tom

I do my chicken TLC in the kitchen sink ..the right height for me ..easy to clean after ( stainless Steel )
Maybe it is the time of the year for it .
My Goldie was being picked on today ..again I didnt notice it ..till I went to put them to bed ...
Maybe i will look for a chicken muzzle ..I think I might know the culprit hen ..they used to have them ..
She had a slight blood spread going down her head to her neck feathers . Almost like a feather splash .
Brought her inside for a bit till I could get to spraying her ..A quick chicken diaper ( plastic grocery bag )
Handle goes Over the head bag part goes in between the legs ..over the tail & other handle goes over the head ..
I quick fix for a chicken inside ..it can wander a bit will you are ready ..to do what you need to do ..LOL
My son was holding her giving her grapes ..Hes 32..

Can blue coat hurt eyes ? Our roo got a good spray in his eye when he moved .
His eye seemed to clear but it still looks a little blue ..they have a second lid right ?
LOL,I like your makeshift diaper idea...

do you remember the ad? If I have one life to live let me live it as a blonde?

I'll have all the manure ready tonight for ya!
Here is something I copied from backyard chickens somewhere
Pasty Butt (Blocked Vent)

A blocked vent is sometimes due to temperature fluctuations suffered by young chicks or more fragile breeds and can be due to stress. There may be other causes, as well. With young chicks, check the temperature in your brooder to ensure it is not fluctuating significantly.
A blocked vent is fatal if not taken care of quickly. A chick suffering pasty butt must be checked on throughout the day and will probably need treatment several times a day for several days.

Treatment:
Clean use a damp rag to remove poo from vent. If the poo is hard, you can soak the chicks bottom in a dish of warm water or put the chicks bottom under warm running water to help remove it.
Dry thoroughly dry the chick. Leaving a chick wet can reduce its immunity and leave it vulnerable to illness or infection.
Olive Oil once the chick is dry, use a Q-tip to gently apply olive oil around the vent to help prevent poos from sticking too hard.
Apple Cider Vinegar several BYCers add a drop or two of apple cider vinegar to drinking water to prevent or reduce the severity of pasty butt.
It might be painful momentarily for the chick but i have never lost a chick to blocked vent... my solution to pasty but is as follows......when i encoulter a pasty but, i remove the mess and then pluck the feathers around the vent within about 1/4". with no feathers to cling to the poop doesn't build up and clog the vent. thankfully i don't get very many pasty butts.
