NY chicken lover!!!!

Loving the sunshine today! So happy that the one rooster has FINALLY let Blondie come out of hiding. Today was her first day out of the coop in ages. The other hens would come out before but she stayed inside. Not sure if that was her choice or his. She has spent the morning scratching, sunbathing and dustbathing.

SunnysideUp, I'll be making a tea out of neem leaf powder and trying it in the coop and nest boxes (spraying it). If I'm happy with the results I'll give you some to try. Maybe it might also work at keeping flies in control too.

Making deviled eggs for Easter dinners. The eggs are finally selling again. We're down to 3 dozen. 1 dozen. 2 just sold as I typed this. lol

Off to clean the brooder in the garage. Man, 15 chicks get stinky fast!

I'm wondering if one of the tetra tints I got from TSC's hospital tank is a roo, even though it came from the pullet bin. Only the one has begun to grow a fairly good comb. The other has almost nothing. What are the chances of getting roos from the pullet bins?

I really want tetra tints but haven't seen any

I would be shot though I think if I brought even more chicks home...after the ones I ordered come in the mail, plus the ones I'm hatching we have the potential to have over 40 chickens...eeek

I want to make some deviled eggs but I'm having some issues peeling the hard boiled eggs. I know this is a problem with fresh eggs and you're supposed to add baking soda to the water. Do you know how much to add? I don't think I'm adding quite enough...

A guy who works at my local TSC said it's not uncommon for chicks from the pullet bin to end up being roos.

I just boil my eggs the day before I need them. After I cool them in water I put them in a bowl in the fridge overnight. No water in the bowl. They peel like yukky ancient store bought eggs then.

I did notice that the BR's they have now are straight run. I was there today and introduced myself to a nice lady who is getting chicks and invited her to join us. It just occurred to me that newbies might not find us here on the NYer thread.

Oh and they have more KC ducks and I was tempted with a two for one offer, but I'd just be putting the cart before the horse if I did.

Did some picking up and rearranging. Ducklings are super stinker and now in the outside run with a house and heat light. They are 4-5 weeks? old. Put away the water heaters, moved the mandarins to their summer yard and filled their pool (they are happy, happy, happy!). They were with the peas and now they are also happy. Peafowl do not like splashy ducks too much.

On another thread someone said " If they were sold as pullets, they will be at least 85% correct...so 15 % chance of Roos

I'm thinking my 2 Amber Link from TSC's hospital tank are roos also , even though it came from the pullet bin. they too are growing fairly good comb.

That's what I was afraid of. If it is a roo, I'll keep him and get rid of the one australorp who has been challenging me. I don't like not being able to turn my back on a rooster. He was thinking about sneaking up behind me again today. I thought we had made it over that hurdle. So, maybe there's a reason I got another roo! lol

Yesterday earl and the girls did a lot of good yard work. I showed them a huge ant hill, but they passed it by. Seramas might have been interested. Today they are more on their own as we have been tending bonfires and feeding them more branches as they get cut or dragged. the feathery ones have discovered the joys of the wooded area. Yay! Get those bugs and grubs!

Where or what breeds are Amber Links developed from? If they are "sex links" there should be no mistaking pullets for roos, as pullets would be one color and roos another.

Case in point. A RIR rooster over a Sussex or Delaware hen will yield male of the Del or Sussex pattern and females of the RIR pattern. This also works with NH's roosters too.

The DeKalb Amber Link
The Amber was developed at the brown egg division in Massachusetts and used early/late
feathering genes for sexing. It produced a 1.5 to 2g smaller egg than the Gold. Some markets,
such as South Africa, liked a smaller egg. But since it had a very high performance the egg mass
output was similar to other brown eggs varieties. Some research flocks had 29 weeks of
production above 90%. With the best nutrition the Amber might have gone beyond 30 weeks
over 90% but because all test flocks were on the marginal side of diet allowances this goal was
not achieved in a research flock.
