NY chicken lover!!!!

One of those three crock pots in one? :). And it' only $30.00 cheap home for three ducks. Here's ya a link. http://www.walmart.com/ip/Farberware-4.5-Qt-Triple-Slow-Cooker-Stainless-Steel/22866800

I laughed so hard when I read this! :) I don't eat duck or have them for pets but this was just funny!
Happyhens, I thought 3 wheelbarrows full of poo was bad! Haha. You obviously have a lot more chickens then I do! I don't know about you but I feel a lot better now that it's done and over. My back is definitely feeling the effects! On that note, taking some Motrin and laying down :/

We went up to my parents house for dinner today. I looked out their window at my uncle's farm yard and there was a raccoon strolling in front of the barn. It was broad daylight around 1pm. My aunt had told my grandma something was getting into her birds, now I know what. The thing was ballsy.
Its unusual for a raccoon to be out in the daytime. The one time we had one here during the day, it was rabid, walked around like it was drunk and wasn't afraid of anyone. Scary..

Very rare for raccoons to be out in the daytime, but sometimes a juvie will forget it's a raccoon and wander around looking for it's momma (who is probably dead) or food, since it's momma is dead. But if it is walking funny, not scurrying along to get out of sight, it is probably sick and should be shot the next time you see it. Birds can't get rabies, they aren't mammals, but YOU can get rabies from the saliva of the raccoon on the birds feathers. WASH YOUR HANDS before you touch anything if you suspect your birds have had any contact with any wild animal...take no chances.

Personally I steer really, really clear of any animal out in the daytime. If I can see them, I don't want them to see me....to many weird wild animals out there. And if it doesn't run away when it does see me, then I run the other way.

I think I need to stop candling and start just going off smell/oozing eggs.
Every time I candle I start to get paranoid about what is normal vs. not. I have a few eggs that I don't think are fertile/aren't growing however they are dark eggs so I can't see very well. Right now though it just looks like a slightly darker yolk, floating in space. At day 7 I would think there should at least be clear growth. My 2 white leghorn eggs have clear veining and are darker around the air pocket.
Ugh I'm so paranoid...there are no smelly eggs, and would the oozing be really obvious or as small as a bit of a wet spot on an egg? I don't want to toss an egg if it might be good. Who had this silly incubating idea anyway?!?!?! oh yeah....

I haven't read anything about hatching at all but i think if i do it i will let the hen do the worrying unless i'm going to try and sell chicks. then again i'm kinda lazy....zzzzzzzzz huh what was we talking about? oh yeah the hen doing the work good night. zzzzzzz.

The bear that comes up to ya will have fun with that idea. : ) but really i don't like seeing any animals out during day unless it's deer hunting season, but that's food on the table here.

True, and the bobcat too. But, so far, I haven't seen a bear or bobcat at any time. To much industry here for the bigger animals to feel safe breathing the air. Mostly I see raccoons, possoms, ground hogs, porcupines and domestic cats gone wild. Oh, and 6 - 8 foot black snakes. Anyone want to catch a couple snakes and take them home? I hear they are good at keeping the rodent population down.

Someone told me that bear's eyes don't glow in headlights. That is scary....cuz if I hit a bear it's gonna leave a mark, at least on the car.

yeah sadly if i start seeing animals in my yard 12gage is going with me or 30-6 depending on what starts comeing around. if small stuff night or when not around will get live trap from mother inlaw and release where it's acceptable. I live around grape fields and a cow farm and some woods in all directions but most I've seen/smelled in my yard was a skunk or two spraying my dogs. female dogs my male never gets hit lol

killed a bobcat last fall at 3pm. It was hunting Sumatra's. I see bear often. They so far could care less about chickens.

Also, baby leghorn girls have huge combs for what you'd be expecting for a chick. They should not have any red in those combs, however. I hatched leghorns last year and the boys were blisteringly obvious by 4 weeks old. Girls had big yellow combs, boys had big beet red combs. I'll have to find my pic of my pullet at 4 weeks with a comb that would have me worried on anythign but a leghorn. :) Second pic the comb looks a bit pink but it's not, really. This turned out to be a girl - my first chicks from a hatchery. Forum got me worried as a few peeps were insisting way back when that these were boys.. but nope. :)

Thanks for the pics ...She

looks so much like our chicks ..
My husband says they have to be girls they never shut up ...LOL..I talk alot more than he does ..
