NY chicken lover!!!!

I JUST MIGHT have one ...
wee.gif
I think it was the same chicken..I went out to get the eggs this afternoon ..there was one there ..
I said Ill come back... offered her some food ..she wouldnt take it ..when I did there was a hen still there ...If it was her she changed position ..
She let me take the eggs ...They were so warm ...She looked underneath her ..as if to say where did they go ..?
I picked her up & she drank & drank ...did nt see if she ate coz I closed them up ..for bed ..She Still has chest feathers ..LOL time will tell

You have to kinda turn the hen upside down to check for missing chest feathers....or run your hand under the feathers that appear to be covering the chest area. If I am in a hurry I just turn them upside down and look at the chest....if I am feeling kind I slide my hands up from their belly to the chest. Naked chicken skin feels kinda yucky, actually.

I...... am...... spineless.
Trip to TSC this evening for wood pellets. They ARE the only place in town that has pellets left.
11 yr old daughter convinces me that we REALLY can fit 6 more chickens in the coop. I finally agreed. Then dh found out they were on sale for $1 a chick. Again. He tells the guy, "We'll take 'em all".
Yup. All 18 of them. Tetra tints.
I hope dh realizes he will have to expand the coop. Again.
Chicks in the garage are just going to have to suck it up and be moved outside tomorrow, so these chicks can go in the garage brooder. There's too many for the rubbermaid container.
Who the heck gave me this Morehens disease, anyways??? Isn't there a vaccination?
My egg customers will be very happy later this summer. I am picking up more customers through word of mouth and have been selling out again. 3 new customers in the last week alone. One lady bought 4 dozen. I have had to have people wait in the driveway while I rinse that day's eggs quickly. At least they are paying their way.

If the coop was only $400-$500 bucks I would pay it but these are coops that's start at $1000, which is NOT an amount I want to spend to begin with. But again if I were to spend that much, what's an extra 200 when you're spending $1000. I think I'm going to try the pallet route. If I can find free pallets and only buy the wood necessary to make the coop draft free it may cost me next to nothing.

Pallet shed that went up in 2011. I'm breaking apart other pallets to make slat walls, or a sane person might just buy plywood for it. I have a few good sources for pallets around me so it's free wood. I'm going to buy plywood for the floor and I have pink foam insulation that is going in behind the slats to help keep it warm in winter and cool in summer.

On another note:

I know it's only about 3 weeks old but please please tell me Tribble looks female. I might cry. I realized tonight that Tribble makes a whisteling like call that the others do not. It's almost like the mating call of a Cardinal. I'm starting to worry that she's a he and he is serenading me.

No, my friend who works at CountryMax who called me when they got their EE shipment in and had me come in for chicks, I wanted 3 EE and 3 Rocks... I left with 4 Rocks, 7 EE and one Mystery Chick.

I'm up to 17 chickens. Thank goodness my Mother In Law (who is my land lady) is ok with this.

Way to go, Heni!

I believe that more hens could be a virus that originates with exposure through computer use, and we are all exposed.

The great nocturnal chicken switch was a success. Wearing my red headlight, I took two hens relatively sedately from the garage to the coop. The return trip was less sedate, one girl with her head under my left arm, head inside my jacket. The second one had to ride on my shoulder so I could latch the coop with my right hand. Naturally she put her wing over my head...sometimes I believe I am channeling Lucille Ball.

I have a copy of Practical Poultry that explains these eggs. Would you like to know what it says about flat sided eggs?   Please keep in mind that the information I pass along is just being regurgitated from the books and periodicals I read.

Yes please! I'm actually really curious if there's a reason for this type of thing.

I call that last one a silicone Egg ...that is what it feels like ..LOL..it is really weird ..:/
Basically that one didnt go through the put on the shell machine in the hen ...Ive got one of those when they 1st started laying ...
Once in a while a hens system is a little off ..Normal egg inside

When I first saw it, I though for sure that's what it was, but it actually has a very solid shell, just with all those weird waves and folds in it - it's odd, but hey, so are silkies :p

I've been searching around everywhere and emailing people for prices for custom made coops. I have two that I ordered online that are still in great condition but I'd like one bigger one that I can keep all the silkies I'll have (5 total after I weed out which chicks I want to keep) plus the two orpingtons. Right now I've taken the two coops plus the run and merged them all together only the coop on the right cannot attach and remain open to all so it's closed until the ducks arrive.
400

It's so frustrating. Everything I find that's reasonably priced, I'll end up spending an additional $100 or $200 on delivery! I finished making my wine rack today out of an old pallet and was thinking, if I could get enough pallets I wonder if it would be possible to make a coop out of them. Someone did it here....

I think it looks great and mine wouldn't have to be nearly as big seeing how small my flock is.

It's completely possible to do a pallet coop. I even have plans for one - it's not too hard, but pulling pallets apart is a PAIN.
