NY chicken lover!!!!

Are these the BR's you spoke to me about?

Yes they are. She contacted me this morning saying someone was interested in the whole flock so I figured I better get there before they're gone. They're being kept in one coop for now while everyone else is in another or free ranging during the day.

How long should I "quarantine" and keep them from the others for?

I'm SO CLOSE to being done with my coop! I need to put the outer door on it, and the inner screen door. Tomorrow I should be able to bring the big ones out! They won't have a run yet, but they'll have the coop until next weekend!

There is an auction every Wednesday in Springville on rt39. That's where I get my veggies and flowers in the spring. They also auction animals in the afternoon. Great place and lots to see
Ok thanks may have to send wife up some time this summer to give them something to do while i'm at work. I work 2-11 so I wouldn't be able to see much in middle of week. My wife is wanting to do a garden so she might like the morning thing also.

I tell you what this pasty family and my self got burned today out in sun not even noticing it till about 6ish I think. Top it all off I only got floor and two walls done and all but 2 rafters up so I have to go out tomorrow and do more. I got a new grill other one was falling apart and I love it. So nice not having food burn as you grill out.

well off to some video games for a bit.

Thanks Stony and all for the thoughts, too many pages back to quote or anything.

Has anyone had hens that square off with a roo? Was just a little posturing, face to face getting tall, and a half hearted kick, then over, just thought it was interesting...

all of the time! My RIR's don't put up with a rooster that isn't their man. They puff up like a rooster, chest bump, chase them around, spur them. And a broody Sumatra. Oh boy. The roosters have learned not to mess with them.

I wonder why folks want BR's so much. Unless she has a good line from a breeder. Hatchery BR's are skinny egg laying machines. IMO

I'm not looking to hatch chicks from these girls or breed them for that matter. I just had my heart set on the coloring. I love the barred pattern especially after seeing my neighbor's Dominiques. My kids have been wanting the "black and white" chickens too. So I figured I'd jump at the opportunity to get a pair of hens. Kids were excited when I got home with them today.

I've got plenty of broodies. What I've been doing is dividing the eggs among them. Only thing is you gotta watch for hatches and take the chicks so the stay on the rest of the eggs. Marans eggs of course are a pain to candle, but the others aren't so bad.

Here's the latest Momma but I did fine another under a hen this AM and put it in the brooder with three others.

Barred Rocks I wish were laying fertile eggs. Plus the Baldwin sisters.

Maybe he need a little blue pill.

Love your coops by the way and this is funny about the rooster.

I agreed I bought my BR from a breed and she lays about 4 a week, she's robust and now top hen. Funny thing we bought when we were looking at silkies only to find a this seemingly giant bird in the silkie pen. She just didn't get along with the other barred rocks she got picked on and kept flying over to the silkie coop and so we got her. She had no problem with my son carrying her to the car, and now she's a talker and our breeder says she's trying to be the Rooster of the group LOL and is just happy to be out of there!

Since we live in the city we say she's a city girl not a farm chick!

Mean Marge doesn't take any crap from any of the younger roosters and even the Alpha Roo (Hic) gives her her space. She's a handful even when she's in a good mood and if she ever goes broody? Well, she'll be sitting on 1000000 eggs by the end of 21 days, cuz I am not brave enough to reach under her to get the extra eggs laid after the clutch was set....I just don't have long enough gloves or short enough hair. (yes, she pulled my hair once when I bent over in front of where she was roosting to get something from the floor) So yeah, Hens can take on a roo...Mean Marge even wins, most of the time.
