NY chicken lover!!!!

Go to college reunion and come home to 44 posts!
My college roommate has been staying with us, so hubby took care of the animals last night. I checked them tonight and counted Luna's eggs to make sure there weren't extras. Instead, she was short 2. There were two busted eggs stuck to her.

One of the Wellies and one of the PRocks. Pulled her out, took the eggs out, dumped the hay out, wiped out the yolk in the bottom, tossed some sawdust and fresh hay in. Got most of the broken egg shells off of her. My questions: Best way to get stuck on egg off of naked skin and chest feathers without breaking boody? Are the eggs all ruined? There is yolk smeared on all 13 remaining eggs. Really dissappointed that I lost 2 and potentially wrecked the rest.

Today was a good day for me. Found a secret duck nest, so I put together a dozen for a friend and passed those off today. Since I don't know how old they were, she's not looking for much, but we'll see! Also got the peeps moved to a bigger brooder (the ducks' old snapset pool) since there were just too many for the tote I usually use.

Lapeerian: Don't worry about it too much. I had an egg explode under my silkie and all the rest did just fine, even though they got a nice yolk coating. Fluff (the silkie) got all the yolk off of herself for me.

Speaking of silkies, does anyone know a local breeder who has eggs for sale, or a good breeder who ships? Since I had to have my girl put down I'm really missing having one in the flock. I'm really interested in paints, but any color at all would be great.

As far as I know beaks grow like finger or toenails do.... am I right?? Usually a beak deformity is a result of a genetic flaw or a vitiman deficiency...I'm just hoping I can rehome or repot mine before it begins to struggle if it will at all... It's a shame, it's So Pretty and So Funny!!

It might be ok if it doesn't grow more. I have one hen with a slightly twisted beak and a twisty foot (musta had a hot spot in the bator) and she does just fine. You wouldn't even notice the beak if you weren't looking carefully.

They are turning out beautiful. What do you have- 4 from Peanut Butter?

Not sure which ones are his. I have three light colored banties - nugget and two matching ladies. Then there's a barred banty, a dark grey/with gold one (still not sure on hen or roo there) and one goldish with black speckles (not quite MF). The rest, if I am counting correctly, are LF.

Well, the first broody hatch experiment has ended with no chicks. There were too many mishaps, and the rain storm getting the eggs wet probably drowned the last two. So, she is out free ranging with the others, and seems to be over whatever grief chickens experience. If there is another broody episode in the flock we'll do better, having hopefully learned something.

The four week olds are getting loud and smelly. They have been pulled in and out of the basement every day in their kennel. I may move them outside into the other kennel that is well shrouded with feed sacks...and they would have a secure fence so they could have a run... And I can paint the trim on the coop, and maybe stain some of the siding...and ... And... Don't you love a sunny day, anything is possible!

Pyxis - where are you located? (I'm on my phone so can't see if it says it under your name) I think the Albany area right? I have a black hen and a splash hen in with my lavender split roo, I can start saving some eggs for you and bring some with me when I go to CT in 3wks. Not sure if you want to wait that long but it'll take me a while to save some anyway. The ones I've been collecting go straight to the fridge. So I'll put some aside. I'll also have chicks come from that trio too if this hatch goes well.
