NY chicken lover!!!!

Quote: Sorry to hear that ..that fox must have had a big family ? Or more than 1 fox ? or coy dog or coyote ?? as they are pack animals

It seems like 6 is a large number for an opportunistic predator, so I will keep looking. Thanks Pyxis, and Lynzi.
Sorry to hear that ..I hope you find some ..
6 does seem like a lot ..When mine were chased by a dog ...they were every direction ..Can you call them or make a come for treats sound ?

It started pouring at the chickens bedtime here ..I spent some time in the run with the chickens ..

it was pouring so bad I didnt want to leave & get totally soaked .

didn't count last night, so four young'uns got shut out last night. Not sure where they were hiding. It was dark but they've gotten over the fence to the side with the marans and didn't apparently know how to get back to their own yard. I will have to check tonight. Last night was church so it was dark when I got home and it had rained. I think they hid in the weed bed.

Thanks, Princess. I've been walking around yet again looking under everything and found the Wyandotte's feathers in a couple of small clumps, and a couple of blonde feathers from a BO, so I think at least 2 won't be coming back. Gonna put them all in the pen and put up the electric fence. With the grass growing so fast I have been loath to use the fence...too soon old, too late smart.

I am sorry for you loss.

The few that are left MAY be hiding somewhere! :) FWIW, I kept my electric fence up all winter (all 500 feet of it) and I mow under it weekly. It's a pain in the butt but I feel better LOL.

I have one of those bright headlamps I use every night to count the chickens. Every night on the way to the coop I say to myself, "I'm a dork, I'm a dork, I'm a dork...".
But it comes in SO handy. Don't know how I lived w/o it.

I've been doing up some jams. Now can anyone tell me about wild grapes. How to tell if what I have are grapes and not moonseed or some other poisonous plant?

I've been around the internet and no one gets right to the nitty gritty and says "Okay this is what wild grapes look like". "This is how to tell wild grapes".

For heavens' sake why can't the just come right out and say what's what!!

Went out today and got my cattle panels for my hoop coop and the wood for the frame. And wouldn't you know as soon as I get home it started pouring. Not even the ducks were out in the rain it was coming down so hard. They ran and hid in their house while I unloaded cattle panels and got soaked. Oh well, at least I have them now, and I have the whole week off, so I should be able to get a good chunk of it, if not all of it, done. Woo, no more overcrowded overheated birds! I have so much space I'm thinking of adding a couple guineas.

Speaking of guineas, can they transmit diseases to chickens? The people I'm getting the 7 week old keets from also have chickens so I'm just wondering if I should take extra precautions.
