NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning all.
Nutty, I thought that's what you meant but wasn't sure. You'll love the barnies. Good luck with the incubator.
Stony, good idea for the grill. Is the bottom stainless?
Lynzi, I hope you get some more eggs.
Breella, I hope she gets to feeling better, she's a pretty girl.
JLaw, there's too many good roo's around to deal with a mean one. If "bat the roo" doesn't work, it's time to get rid of him. You can't have him going after the wife and kids.
Danielle's doing fine. She's not too sore and started to move the arm around yesterday. She's very happy that she gets to take a shower today :)
Enjoy the day everyone.

Chris

Morning all!

Chris--good to hear that your other half is doing well. A shower always feels good when you have been laid up.

Jlaw--sounds like your roo is in his idiot stage. Be firm and assertive and have your wife and kids do the same. I had to do that with my former roo and have started with my new roos. Roger got pinned to the floor twice in a row by me when he nipped me the first time when I was petting the girls and went to pet him. He screamed a lot when I did it cause he was scared and then I picked him up and held him upside down for a bit while I was busy with the feeder and then I turned him back up and proceeded to do a full inspection of him, held his beak for a bit while telling him no pecking and then put him down. He avoided me for a couple of days and is now minding his manners. I purposely walk towards him and make him move away from me to show him that I am the boss. I hold the girls in front of him and make him move back while doing so. He ate out of my hand the other day very gently and I rewarded that behaviour with a good boy. As everyone else has already said, if he doesnt straighten out, you can always eat him. Plenty of other roos out there. Only you can asses whether or not his temperment will mellow with age and work. Mean roos are tasty, respectful roos are great flock protectors and breeders.

Stony--nice to see Im not the only one who thinks outside the box. Necessity is the mother of invention!

Had a chuckle this morning. Let out the cheeps and I was watching the divas and tots before moving on to the next coop and I hear scrawking and see Roger trying to put the moves on one of the rir pullets. She screams and gets away. He turns and looks at Gladys (the glw whose pic I posted a couple days ago) and takes a step towards her. Well, her head goes up and she takes a step towards him with a Dont you even think about that nonsense with me boy look on her face and he takes off running for the other side of the run! Mind you, he is taller than she is but she outweighs him and he is still young. I had to laugh. He is trying hard to crow in a manly style but it aint happening yet. He is trying to be bold but I am keeping after him by walking at him and making him move when I am out with them and holding and petting the girls in front of him, His brother Bill just stays far away watching.

Have a nice day everyone!

Morning!
Well I have 4 eggs set in the bator!, If I get another one today I'll throw that one in there as well. Taking my son to his first Red Sox game this weekend. Won't be able to turn the eggs tomorrow or Sunday morning but I'm sure since it's so early that won't make a difference. I was going to go out and buy an egg turner but I only have 4 eggs. I'll get one when I'm ready to hatch a dozen or more. I read online somewhere some people don't even start turning their eggs until the 5th or 6th day of incubation. So I'm giving it a go. I'll turn them first thing when I get home Sunday night. if I can get at least 1 orp egg to hatch and that lone silkie egg I'll be happy.

My silkie chicks are 6wks and the dark blue 4wks today. I swear I already see tiny mulberry little waddles on one of the older chicks. I'm still thinking these two are splash. If one ends up a hen I'll keep her and sell the roo. I'll be up to 3 silkie roos if I don't and may have to start separating them all and bring them in with the hens for breeding only.

OMG the neighbors on both sides of me got robbed I'm so worried about my chickens, these are petty thieves so I'm sure my pit mix stardard schnauzer mix keep people back. The yorkie just barks because they are barking lol. my six foot privacy fence makes it hard to get stuff as well.

"Danger, Guard Dog" and "Protected by Smith & Wesson" signs work well too.

Got a $50 dollar gift card rebate from Lowes today from when we bought the washer so am thinking I will use that on supplies for the kids homemade incubator. I am pretty sure I am going to show some chickens at the fair next year. Don’t know anything about it so got to start researching it.
Found some patterns for Hen saddles and am going to whip up some the only thing I will need is snaps and elastic as I have tons of fabric sitting in totes and am pretty good with a sewing machine so figure give it a shot I could even embroider the hens name on it with my embroidery sewing machine. Just another project to add to my busy schedule
Nutty, I made some last year (note to self: need more saddles again) and they were very easy. I found old jeans material worked very well. It wasn't so thick that it didn't mold around their bodies, but it was thick enough to protect from the roo.

Speaking of roosters, I'm looking to rehome my Australorp roo (1 yr old). He has come after me a couple times, but it was when I was chasing hens. He could probably be worked with. My main issue with him is that he mates A LOT. I have 1 other roo that mates a small amount, and 51 girls. Many have bare backs and broken wing feathers. His hormones haven't calmed down at all. He is a VERY good alarm however and is ALWAYS at attention (that is when he's not mating). I won't be heartbroken if someone wants him only to process. If no one wants him he will go to auction on the 17th.
Any takers? Come get him.

Whoever mentioned the crazy roo, Duane heard the girls making a fuss after I took the eggs the other day and came in looking for what was wrong, set eyes on me and started towards me. I waved my arms and started after him and he ran for the hills.

As for Pearl, This morning she invaded the nest box and took all of the eggs (none of them hers). I entered to coop to find her sitting on both eggs with Frenchie sitting ontop of her! They both want to raise some babies but the only ones I would be interested in raising in my flock would be cross between Pearl and Duane (Silkie X Dark Brahma) and Pearl still won't lay.

Maybe she's just really really broody? and mad at me because I won't let her sit?

I have some type of sinus thing knocked me on my butt. I couldn't even go for a run today. Something upset the dogs last and then it was gone. Ugh gotta go to work soon, ugh and I have a matted Newfoundland to groom. I hope my girls lay more eggs. I need to start providing my parents breakfast on the weekends.
