NY chicken lover!!!!

aqhachick--why are you shooting a rooster? You cant catch him?

Stony--be right over! Cant eat the dogs cause of the nitrates but I LOVE venison burgers!

Rancher--I hope your broodies break soon and you get eggs.

Another delightful day in pharmland and the reason why I like chickens more than people sometimes. Roger was trying to crow again when I came home. He is so funny. Got a message from my daughters demanding real food. Giuess I will be baking all weekend so I can bring down goodies to them. Nothing like moms loving home baking to feel better!
I'm not shooting a rooster I'm going to be catching them and bringing them to Berkshire View. I'm just curious, kind of a strange question to ask without any background info

For awhile I was considering just doing it myself and not making the drive to Berkshire View so I was doing research on how to do everything myself and I came across some people saying to just shoot them which I thought was odd.

The way it sounded, you wanted to know how to shoot a rooster. Yes people shoot roosters all the time. A pellet gun to the head works the best. Quick and humane. Chris

Yeah sorry, I realized that after I re-read it

I was just confused because I don't see a point in shooting a rooster if you want to eat it. I thought any small bullet would just be inhumane and anything big would ruin the meat.

people including myself shoot turkeys with a 12 gauge shotgun and don't ruin 1 bit of meat. People shoot ducks and geese out of the sky with a 12 gauge. Any gun owner worth his salt should be able to kill a rooster at close range with either a pellet gun or a .22 with shorts. And kill it as quickly and humanely as picking it up, flipping it upside down, sticking it in a cone and cutting it's throat. I would say the small caliber gun is more humane than the "normal" way of killing roosters. The legality of it I don't know.....

That's me too, I've got a fridge full of eggs. Love my chickens, but I need to downsize. Just don't know who gets to go. :)

Have a sick chick (one of CB's most recent babies) that got squashed after I let them out in genpop. I'll probably need to put her down but I am no good at that when it comes to babies.. Ugh.

That's the dilemma, who goes. I've got pullets and roosters coming up. Mostly EE's and Marans.

I've got 9 chicks plus three older chicks in with the Dels. I don't wish to part with any Del chicks, but there are two EE's. I'd like to put the older girls back on layer pellets, though they are still laying better than any others.

While I like the Marans but I'm sick of them going broody and having to toss them out of the coop each day. Even though they just go back in and sit on nothing. Even the Sussex hen is broody.

One marans does have eggs and a chick started but I don't think things are turning out very well for it. The one hen who is laying goes into that box and lays her egg and may have squashed it.

Truth be told, I'm getting tired of chickens or at least dealing with so many. Plus washing eggs. I'm spending money on feed, only to give eggs away. I'm working now you see, and even part time it's getting harder.

I like my job very much, but I do need to do more than drive folks to their appointments. Sometimes it means going in with them, helping them out of the van, etc. etc. There isn't to much pressure and I can be nice. You would think all employers want you to be nice but that isn't always so.

We went to Marcellus park today. It started to rain. There was thunder and lightning. I don't mind saying I was a little scared. We did manage to get everyone back home safely. I will say it's a very pretty park. I plan to take the Queen there.

The place I work is super nice and clean. The staff is very good with the residents.

Tomorrow I'll be taking count of what I have and not the usual chickens math. Then I'll decide who to keep and who has to go.

take care and have a good day tomorrow.

All depends on location on the shooting of the roo. My neighbor fires his hand guns randomly some times. He warns us sometimes others he don't. I shoot my pellet gun sometimes but not my 12 gage or 30-06 that's just cause I don't want the attion to me.

Now thing to remember about shooting birds you shoot the head not the body. Those feathers are tuff and can/will repell smaller rounds/birdshot. Here is a link but for turkeys hope this helps the person asking about shooting chickens.

Miquwid I hope you get to feeling better

Jlaw My girls pay no attention to the saddles I have only had 2 that were a little funny about it at first but after a few hours they were fine.
I am hoping to have time this weekend to make some but hubby wants to go to some snowmobile thing in Boonville tomorrow and I do have papers to get done to be handed back on Monday so will see.

I started to catch up on posts yesterday, but then had to leave to go get my girls and didn't get to finish. I'm not sure where I left off so....

I'm saying good morning! Everyone have a good day. We're off to Cortland for a wedding today and probably won't be back on until tomorrow.

I think when I'm downsizing I'll concentrate on my nine escape artists. We hooked up an electric fence for them with a nice charger and they've gotten the hang of hopping over it immediately so it's useless. Strangely enough, in my back area with most of my chickens I have the same setup and not once has anyone jumped out in two years. Grr. Anyone interested in nine escape artist chickens? :) Would have to count again but I think four are huge black australorps from annie, four olive/green eggers and one mutt white chicken (leghorn x BO). About 1.5 years old and so friendly they follow me everywhere and poop in the garage pottering after me trying to get in the house. :p

One is perpetually broody and one is missing feathers on her head - she was also broody, but decided to snuggle under two other broodies and they ate her feathers for breakfast. So now she looks like johnny rotten.

They really are good chickens, but if I put them in with my compliant ladies I think they'll teach them bad habits. :p
