NY chicken lover!!!!

Morning!
Trying to decide if I should give the coops a good cleaning or let it go a couple more weeks and do it closer to winter. I've just been throwing new shavings in there from time to time. I'd like to at least move the duck pen to another spot before that whole area becomes mud.

Miquwid ~ Hope you're able to help that bird and get that wound healed. Could it be from a roo??

Glass ~ We don't BBQ that often either only because, well obviously that's all my husband does all day. LOL We do grill though. We throw everything on the grill. Actually I was at a friends a couple of summers ago and they were grilling pizza on the grill. It was sooooo good! I'd like to do that if I can get my hands on a good pizza stone. I'm hoping now that I'm not working, that I can find some good recipes and start cooking for us instead of it always being DH. I can only cook if I follow a recipe though, otherwise it's a disaster. LOL

Still not sure when we're doing the fair. It's probably going to be a last minute decision when we do decide to go. DH still isn't sure what day he's off this week/weekend.

Those with ducks, I've been noticing my KC female doing this weird thing now when she's walking with the others. She'll walk forward and keep looking back to the side towards the ground. I'll have to try to get a video of her doing it. Not sure if it's just a gesture or if I should be concerned. I've never seen her do it before two weeks ago. So as she's walking it's almost like she sees something in the grass as she's passing it and looks back at the ground beside her and then keeps on. Kinda like if were walking and thought you dropped something and looked down to the side/behind you? It's just really weird cuz she does it over and over and over again. Like a "tick" she has. LOL I'll try to get a video when I get back from the store.

Could be a mating thing ? she still has a lot of potential husbands right ?

miquid - hope your Brabanter heals up well. Mine is very prone to getting creamed by the older birds. Every time I try to put her in with them, she gets hammered. She is definitely slower and low-girl on the totem pole.

Xovan - cannot believe how well your severely injured pullet healed. WOW! That's great news.

Lynzi - your drake is very handsome indeed! How many chickens are you up to now, you addict, you!

Pharm - I still miss my Dad terribly, and he's been gone 20 years. Hard to believe. The 1st year is the toughest. Sorry for your sadness. I do understand. I've been photographing the deer and young bucks in their velvet lately. Some images made it to Syracuse.com (Dave Figura's outdoor blog / wildlife photo section, if you get a minute to check them out. )

All's well with my flock, except the continuing separation, but I am home from the crazy weekends away and things are a little easier now. Yesterday, I let Helen out with the young girls to do a little supervised free range (Helen is the boss lady, Marans hen -- only one laying so far). The Coronation Sussex challenged her, and although she kept making herself taller than the Marans, Helen took a swift shot at Cracker and that ended the challenge!

Cracker ran off like a scared school girl. She will have to be satisfied with being Queen of the Littles... for now, anyway. She is a BIG girl, though.

My pears are falling off the tree. Must be a similar variety. Have been getting PA peaches at farm stands, they are incredible.

I held a gun yesterday. It was all plasticky. And no one has ammunition. Did find some horribly expensive, but during the learning phase, cheap is the way to go. Will keep looking.

did you get a 22 ? ammunition for this is almost impossible to find ..If Dicks gets it in on thurs it sells out immediately ..
I think you can still get ammo for a rifle ..it is a little heavier gun though

Nice to see you are back ...
did anyone tell you to put them together at night ? when they are all asleep ...bring in the younger ones & put them on the roost .
They are more accepting at night ...they just want to sleep ..
There will be some pecking in the morning but should be less than if you introduce them in the day ..
The pecking has to happen to establish the flock pecking order ..I know it is stressful to you ..it distresses me too ...
if it gets too bad you can separate them again . If they draw blood .
There will always be one chicken that is at the bottom of the pecking order ...who will get the most pecked at .

Well Yes and No....the two magpie drakes have been kept separate in the pen while the others free range because they keep leading my girls toward the road. So while she is out she's only with her mate and the two female runners.

TOB - as for chickens I still only have the 4 bigger ones that free range- three Orps and a BR. I don't really count the silkies anymore cuz they stay in their coop/run. I have 5 silkies and now a frizzle!

Hi & thanks, Gramma.

Yes, I do know that tip about introduction on the roost at night. Rancher and others have mentioned that in the past. But there is the added complication that the Brabanter is partially blind in both eyes. She cannot see to defend herself. It would more than likely mean an eventual death sentence to put her in with birds that are not only much larger and heavier than she is, but also very fast and strong. They pick on her terribly whenever I try, and that's how the eye injuries happened in the first place. Hence the dilemma. I'm just not willing to "throw her to the wolves", so to speak, so I continue to have extra work. sigh...........

Another option would be to just keep her separate and put the other two, more robust pullets, in with the original flock. But that would mean (separation) stress for her as well, and still the pain to put her in and out separately. Not sure what I'm going to do down the road as everyone starts to lay eggs.

Don't worry about it. It's some sort of mating thing. Bonnie does it all the time.

So you have maybe a mild case of Morehens Disease, but not too serious....YET.
