NY chicken lover!!!!

Please be sure to quarantine any birds you do get.

What are you charging for eggs? If it's more than $2.25 you could buy mine and resell them, til you get more hens.

Quarantine, always. I have two crate style things for outdoor time and a few dog crates for QT of new birds. Speaking of new birds, did you get rid of all the ones you were looking to rehome?

As for selling, I have been charging my coworkers $2, I end up barely breaking even on summer feed but today at work my coworker was telling a woman about my eggs and how amazing he thought they were and she offered to start paying me $3 a dozen! I think that I'm going to have to take what little nice days we have left and really work on getting the other half of the shed empty so I can open up the coop more.

What do you guys think of this ad? What are your experience with battery hens? I think I remember reading that they are more likely to be feather pickers and egg eaters.

Edit note: Wait, if they were battery hens, they they were probably vaccinated correct? I also remember reading that I shouldn't mix vaccinated birds into my non vaccinated flock.

Lots of robins in my yard, also blue jays and a flicker. Just like Spring. So maybe a short winter, or did I just miss it?

Hi Glasshen,

Not all our robins migrate, but if you are seeing large #'s in your yard, they are probably pushing through, heading south. Bluejays will stick with us throughout the winter. They'll take advantage of nuts and seeds they have cached away during the fall. Central NY is in the year round range for Northern Flickers, as well. So I hate to burst your bubble, but we are staring winter down here shortly!

Enjoy the birds. I do, year round!

Also, talk about a chick announcing itself as a rooster. Today one of the Barred Rock x Dark Brahma chicks ran out of the coop, he's twice the size of the other chicks, legs thick as MARKERS with waddles already at two and a half months old. I may take him aside and start giving him fermented feeds to bulk him up for his culling. Should be able to make him look good by thanksgiving.

1. yes I did get rid of my extras, but have eggs in the incubator for more Dels. My best layers.

2. you need to raise your price as do I. Though TSC Dumor has come down. Still it could be better.

3. I suspect they are used up commercial chickens and I would not expect much from them. They may lay a few eggs, but you want more than that. They are hybrids and you could make those yourself. I have EE's,that still lay.

4. Vaccinated birds won't pass anything onto your birds that I know of, but I'm sure I'm wrong if you've read that it's so. Be aware that vaccination is no guarantee. Even our flu shots are not 100% effective.

5. Keep in mind they are terminal birds. Once they're done laying, they're done. $5 is a bit much for year old production birds.

Cass-- I had Nora Heath 10-1-13. She was 8# 14oz and has gained steadily since. Last Friday she was 9#14oz at her appointment.

Yay! You're back

That is go exciting, Tab. I can't wait to give her a little hug (cuz she is little) next May. (Let me know if there is anything I can do to help with picnic...and I still have tickets for a raffle)

WOOOHOOO!!! I'm coming. As soon as I open my 2014 calendar I will mark it down. (As soon as I find out where my 2014 calendar WENT. I know I bought it, just have been busy as a one armed paper hanger, so stuff is everywhere. Maybe I put the new calendar with the old calendar? Now where did I put the OLD calendar?)

Same here. It's good to know the date so I can hatch for it and bring chicks again. I'm sure if you supply the place we who come can fill up the tables. DW and I have a table and chairs we can bring too.

We can bring the burgers again too. We're not far from a Maines.

Though I haven't checked with DW yet.

We have robins most of the winter here. Instead of being paired up they generally show up in a flock and hang out by the moving water coming from the duck pen.
