NY chicken lover!!!!

Everyone looks very happy this morning. Their combs are brighter, some were pale, which I thought was molting stress. They all flew out, usually it was only four. The coop still smells wonderful, I used Mrs Meyer's lavender all purpose spray, perhaps it gave them a good nights sleep.

Hey Pyxis! Glad you like the new chicks - so some of them (other than Scalpy) were girls after all? Good! They all looked boyish to me, but I don't know bantam cochins too well.

I should have brought mama too - she's a little black barred cochin and she still hasn't been able to integrate back in with her 'sisters' since I took her babies away. Poor little thing was only separated by an electronet x the last month and now I put her in there and she gets chased out. Silly chickens!!

I am still getting eggs here - but only from my california whites.. Almost everyone else is on winter strike. :(

[Was looking around on the site, found something on Iveron, Ivermectin, and Eprinex Questions post 13 saying that Eprinex works on worms, lice and mites. So I did start well. And I will continue to clean the coop, sweeping out all the rest of the litter, washing the lower walls, and taking out. The carpet pieces in nest boxes and washing the nest boxes.

But, maybe I should hold off on bathing the birds, so I don't weaken the Eprinex? Or does it absorb so quickly that I would not be washing it off? Or, if I just spray the dawn and water, as Lynzi suggests, would that be the way to go?

I always have so many questions on what should be easy.

The key ingredient in Exprinex is similar to that used in flea treatments for dogs and cats and works in the blood stream I believe.

The key is to get rid of the larvae. This is why I dust with DE. It dries them up.

Mites and lice thrive in dark moist places, which is why you need to be sure to dust under their arms and around their butts.

When I clean I make sure to "dry" out any wet areas of the coop, by dumping extra in those areas. I'm not sure we can completely iradicate them 100%, but with maintanence control their numbers.

FYI, I once put DE on a slug and he was gone in minutes. No sign it was even there. I use it in my garden now too, but only on dry evenings.

I do have a question though. How common are tape worms in chickens? Some wormers do not work on tap worms.

I wonder if some of us have had chickens succumb to tape worms.

Is it true that adding some ACV to fermented feed "reverses" it from fermenting into alcohol? (I know it doesn't really reverse it, but I think I read something about ACV with THE MOTHER digesting alcohol proteins) I think I had a batch go the wrong way due to lack of water while I was at work and want to know if it can be saved with some water and ACV before I trash it.

Fermenting creates lacto bacillus, adding vinegar hinders its development. Just add more water & see how it goes.

Congrats on the new babies and good next spring I can't wait to see what you come up with. How are the faverolles? You are breeding them right? (I hope I have the right person :idunno )  Sevin works and so does Pirmethryn (sp) both work fast. Sevin you can get anywhere, the other would be TSC

Yep, that's me with the faverolles too. And I'm also doing silkies. I went a little crazy. Featherz, too bad about momma hen not being accepted. And yes, it looks like it was an even split. County Boy kept the mystery chick - he thinks it's buff barred without the white - to use in his breeding this spring. Scalpy (I really need to give her a name) is doing well and settling in and is very sweet. I got to meet Nugget, and he was a gentleman, no chasing. He did follow us around, but that's it.

Pyxis keep me posted about the faverolles im super bummed about my girl not puffing out i would like one other bird with a nice beard. Granite im just breeding for eggs and leftovers are for meat, but i would like a little eye candy lol

I love that I cleaned out the new coop the other day, replaced the shavings, put some hay in there, then cleaned out of the nestboxes, filled them with fresh shavings and hay, only to open it up this morning and see the nest boxes FILLED with poop! UGH Well I guess it doesn't matter since they're not laying anyway.

Got some hatching eggs from  Ke5hde yesterday and set them in the bator. All silkies (Rancher, I know you're jealous). Can't wait to see what hatches out! I should have a better hatch rate this time because I have more eggs than my last hatches. So we'll see. :fl
Lindsay, great that your trying hatching. GO GIRL. Someday, I hope to try., I have
a beautiful Splash Rooster and a beautiful Blue.... I always put fresh hay in the nest boxes.
DAILY. This keeps the eggs clean. Today, after some time I had 5 clean eggs. Since I am
not teaching this semester (home to care for hubby that had knee replacement) gives me
quality time to visit BYC. Regards, Aria

miquwid, Thanks for asking. He was in Physical Therapy for 2 weeks and then
4 weeks in out patient PT. Now home, doing the physical therapy exercises
they sent home for him to do. He is doing GREAT.

In fact, he had one knee done and the other is BAD too. The doctor would NOT
do two in on surgery. NOW, he can start think about the other knee. I wish the
new knee replacement will "take the load". No fun being the care taker. The one
nice thing about it....I can visit BYC. AND, I am not so sure I want to go back
to College????

Do you live near Rochester? My son lives there. Regards, Aria

Oh goody goody goody, I'm getting some Sebastapol adult geese....wheeee!
